Can not setup SG-1100 with 192.168.1.1
-
I get the below message when I use Chrome or Edge when I attempt to connect and setup my SG-1100:
Result:
This site can’t be reached192.168.1.1 took too long to respond.
Try:Checking the connection
Checking the proxy and the firewall
Running Windows Network Diagnostics
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUTI have tried it a number of times and ways.
Sometimes it took me to the ASUS Router login page. Never took me to the Netgate setup.
Please help!!!
Thanks in advance:-) -
This might mean your ASUS router and pfSense have the same IP address. If so, that can never work.
How do you have all this connected up? And is your Internet provided by a cable TV provider, DSL, or something else like a Wireless ISP or fiber to the home?

@bmeeks
I thought the same about the IP address. My Asus router IP address was changed at install; it is no longer 192.168.1.1.
I have also attempted to setup with the router turned off then with WiFi in 'Airplane' mode.Connected as follows:
- Laptop to LAN port
My ISP is fiber optic to an ONT box. - ONT Ethernet out plugged into the WAN port.
Both green lights are on steady. - Power applied
- Tried again with power unplugged as illustrated in one of the setup examples.
- Laptop to LAN port

Have you connected to the console of the firewall using the special USB serial cable? You need to see what is actually being output as the firewall boots up. It may not be completing the boot sequence.
For now, leave your ASUS router totally out of the picture and unplugged. Go from your ONT Ethernet connection to the WAN port of the SG-1100. Then you can plug your laptop into the LAN port of the SG-1100, but still connect the USB serial cable that came with in the box with the firewall. For Windows, you will need to download and install the driver as outlined in the official documentation here: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-1100/connect-to-console.html.
VERY IMPORTANT! The SG-1100 is a full computer. It has a disk subsystem and does not like having the power plug pulled without a proper shutdown command being issued from either the console while logged in, or from the GUI if logged in there. Never, ever just pull the power connection. If you do, disk corruption is likely and the file system will need to be repaired. Instructions for that are available at the Netgate documentation site I linked to earlier.

I see. I don't have the USB cable. I purchased this second-hand, though not used. I'll get the cable from my friend and proceed as you suggest; hopefully tomorrow!
Thanks for the directions on caring for my 'Computer'; I'll definitely keep that in mind!
I'll update you either tomorrow or over the weekend.
Thanks again! -

Thanks again!Yes, you will absolutely want that cable. It is a special cable. I suspect your filesystem is corrupt and the box is not booting. It is halting on the filesystem error and waiting. Or else, if you got it second-hand, the LAN address is not really set to 192.168.1.1. The previous owner could have set it to something else.

Gotcha, thanks!!! -

Gotcha, thanks!!!With the USB serial connection cable connected and using something like PuTTY to connect to the box, it will show you all the currently configured IP addresses (assuming it boots completely). If it fails to boot, then you can follow the steps in the Netgate docs to repair the filesystem.
By the way, the USB serial cable comes in the box. If the cable is not there, then someone opened the box already and removed it.

The console cable is a standard USB to USBmicro cable. Almost any should work there with the exception of cables that only have the power pins connected. We have also seen some cables with a 'short' end that won't connect properly at the 1100 end.
It you have a cable from an old phone etc it will probably work.Steve

Good to know. For some reason I had it my mind the cable was special.

@bmeeks I'm not sure if it's a special cable or not. In a pinch, I have just grabbed a mini USB cable and used it on the older boxes (8860, 4860, etc.)
This model has the micro-USB port on the side, however. Probably safe to assume that a low-cost cable from Amazon would work just fine.

Well I wouldn't buy that particular one since it appears to include some sort of fast charge circuitry. I have no idea how that affect a USB data connection through it.
