Upgraded from 2.6.0 CE to Plus. Now I'm stuck.
-
I managed to register the device and upgrade to pfSense+ successfully. Now running 22.01.
When trying to upgrade to a newer version, the "System -> Update" dropdown branch still shows me "Latest stable version (2.6.0)" and there is no option for another "plus" version to upgrade to. Not only that, I also see the "Unable to check for updates" message.
I followed the troubleshooting guide. Running the "pkg-static update-f" I see the message "No trusted public keys found". I followed the steps under "Rewrite Repository Information" but it doesn't change anything.
What other options do I have?

This sounds like what happened to me the first time I tried to update to Plus. I couldn't see an update in the webGUI, although I was able to attempt an update at the console. The update failed, though.
When I recovered back to 2.6 CE and tried again, the webGUI saw an update. But the 23.01 failed again, though.
Good luck.

@reggie14 Oh so you "downgraded" to 2.6.0 CE and then tried again? Ugh, that sounds risky. Not sure I'm comfortable trying that..
-
To clarify, I did a fresh install of 2.6 CE and restored my config. A slight pain, but not risky.
-
@reggie14 Ah, got it. Makes sense. I'm hoping I don't have to go the re-install route! But if no options are suggested, that's what I'll end up having to do, sadly.
-
@jxsanche As long as you have a backup of the config.xml file, reinstalls aren't so bad. Just stick the config.xml on the installation media.
If it were just me, it wouldn't be a big deal. But I end up with an angry household when I muck with the router.

Hello all,
I ran across the exact same issue. Initial migration from 2.6 CE to Plus 22.01 successful, but after the reboot there's no Plus branch available in the update section.
I was hoping for some kind of workaround without having to re-install from scratch. Any tips from anyone, before resorting to wipe/re-install?
-
I would try out to march the following road, upgrading;
-
install 2.6 CE (zfs)
-
upgrade to 22.01
-
upgrade to 22.05
-
install 2.7 Dev (zfs)
-
upgrade to 23.01 if needed

@dobby_ thanks for the reply.
My initial installation was 2.6 CE (ufs; don't ask why...) and it went nicely to 22.01. And there I stuck, just like the OP.
If I don't find a workaround, I will resort in re-installing from scratch. Silver lining: I'll go to zfs this time.
Still I'm hoping to avoid the downtime, to spare myself from the household complaints :)

@rcoleman-netgate thank you Ryan for the reply. Everything points to this direction, so I will end up reinstalling. I'll sort out a backup internet connection for the downtime period and then I will proceed.
Thank you also for the tip that there's an upgrade path now directly to 23.01
FWIW, I fetched the keys from git, so the "Unable to check for updates" error is now gone.
Cheers!

@rcoleman-netgate I finally found the courage and the energy to proceed with a re-installation from scratch. However, no luck with the upgrade to Plus :(
pfSense CE 2.6 was installed gracefully, and with ZFS this time (yay!), including my previous configuration.
The "Register" section indicated "Your device does not require registration, we recognize it already. You may have already registered, or it may be a pre-registered Netgate appliance.", so I proceeded with the upgrade procedure for Plus.
When the device rebooted, it actually never came back, as I describe here. I tried twice, both times no luck.
I'll wait if there are any replies to my post above that might give some different approach or workaround.
Cheers!

While it seems uninvolved that’s a lot of steps. My understanding is once every version is in “Released” status the upgrade from a CE version to the + version is straightforward. Being early adopters means we experience all sorts of unexpected outcomes.
Plus if PFsense CE version was a hard reinstall, okay, worth doing the longer process. CE version is such an easy reinstall it’s faster than trying to figure stuff out, go with 2.7 while the + upgrade is being sorted.
Having said that, this morning my update option is back, I can check for updates. Which I could not do yesterday evening. So of course here I go, clicking “confirm”…. :)
It would be nice if we got an all clear, green light, etc., and to try again from someone in the know.
Also I’m ZFS. Have been for most of the time I’ve been using PFSense.

thanks for the suggestions. Just to mention that my "procrastination" and the "courage and energy" parts were more humorous than real. Working mostly from home, but also primarily having a 7-year-old at home attached to his cartoon shows, we're heavily dependent on the Internet connectivity. So I was waiting for a suitable time to perform the re-installation, and the Easter break was the perfect opportunity.
The previous attempt to go from 2.6 to 22.01 didn't go exactly well (the Plus repos were not present at all after the upgrade), so I was stuck with a working Frankenstein of a firewall that was both 2.6 and Plus. No upgrades were offered. Hence I went for the re-installation starting from scratch, but those attempts went totally south. Oh well :)

@euri Nothing changes as they age. I have a window before my wife's baseball team is streaming on MLB.COM.
Did not work. For me once installed and boot, PFSense can no longer find the bootable drive.
I'm done until there's an all clear from PFSense folks to do the update path to 23.01.

I was reinstalling 2.6 (ZFS) on the APU6B4 and then I was upgrading to 23.01 and all went fine for me, after installing all needed patches and packets I am now better sorted then ever before! But the APU4D4 I was deciding to give TNSR
23.02 a chance. With pfSense 2.7 DEVEL installed on it, I was
never getting hot in touch, problems over problems only
after the first upgrade of the entire system!
