@aaronssh Same exact issue for me. So far no simple fixes. I'll check again later and hopefully the issue is resolved.

@drewjc Glad to hear that I'm not the only one. I am still confused as to how it cleared on all four of my routers without any intervention. They are entirely unrelated routers at different companies.

@drewjc I've had the same issue over the past few days trying to install Wireguard on 23.01. The package showed up as available in the GUI, but install attempts resullted in the "Another instance ..." message. There were no pkg-static processes running on the router.

pkg-static install -yf pfSense-pkg-WireGuard ran with no issues from the CLI.

I'm new to pfSense and hoping there are no downsides to this approach :)

Exactly the same PROBLEM and REMEDY...

I can install packages over CLI but getting error (Another instance of pfSense-upgrade is running. Try again later)via GUI.

            @aaronssh

For the update/upgrade you may have a certificate and
if you run updating process to much (often) the cert.
lease time is gone, after a while you will be able to
realize your update/upgrade. I was also seeing that
message. Now I am on 23.05 RC and 2.7 Devel and
all is fine again. I was swapping over and over
            between the both versions!
            2.6 - 2.7
            23.01 - 23.05

So there could be also a certificate mismatch on
both machines that went now away.

If you see one or both of that messages (shown below), and it is really important or urgent, you may be able
to ask the support at Netgate for someone "bumbing" your cert. that you will be able to update/upgrade in
            time (short time later)

I'm seeing the "Another instance of pfSense-upgrade is running. Try again later".

Ran 'pkg-static update -f' as recommended other places in the forum and noticed a buttload of cert issues. Maybe the cert used to sign the 23.05 RC isn't trusted?

Same issue for me here running an SG-3100 on 23.01.

Running the update via the GUI I get the error 'Another instance of pfSense-upgrade is running. Try again later'

And from the CLI, using option 13, I get the following errors:

                Enter an option: 13

                Segmentation fault (core dumped)
failed to update the repository settings!!!
failed to update the repository settings!!!

Have there been any announcements from Netgate that I've missed? Usually it's smooth sailing for upgrades.

                      @crgbt

Is CLI in the WebGui in that case?
Did you try out the console (serial) and then
                      choosing option (13)?

@Dobby_ The CLI output in my post is from the ‘real’ CLI (via SSH), rather than the Web GUI ‘Command Prompt’ page - I didn’t realise you could run the options through the ‘Command Prompt’ page actually!

Further update, I’ve tried forcing a pkg metadata update using ‘pkg-static update -f’ and a manual update check using ‘pfSense-upgrade -d -c’ with no success - the same errors are present, even after a system halt, power down (power out for 10 sec) and powered back up.

I was able to fix mine.
Go to system-update then Update settings and change it to previous version 23.01 and save it.
In console run: pkg-static clean -ay; pkg-static install -fy pkg pfSense-repo pfSense-upgrade
Once that completes go back to GUI and change back to current stable 23.05. Once that has saved, then go back to console and run the option 13 to upgrade. Worked like a champ for me.

@s0m3f00l And you made sure to go into the GUI, to the update settings and change it tp previous version 23.01 then save before you did that, correct?

@s0m3f00l Well, that is unfortunate. I guess try that with other suggestions and see if combo of this works. It worked for me on bare metal, so was worth posting. Good luck!

Okay this one appears to work.

The basic process appears to be:

                                    1. In Gui Set System Update to previous version

                                    2. Goto console and enter 'pkg-static update -f'

                                    3. In console enter 'pkg-static clean -ay; pkg-static install -fy pkg pfSense-repo
                                      pfSense-upgrade
                                      '

                                    4. 'exit' the console

                                    5. Goto GUI and change System Update to Current Stable (23.05) version

                                    6. Goto admin page and use option '13'

                                    7. Update starts and completes as normal.

Thanks to @Boboki for starting my path to upgrading.

                                    See output below:

@Boboki thanks, your method worked for me! With a slight variation: in the last step I just pressed 'upgrade' in the Gui, instead of going back to command prompt.
