SG-2100 Issue with game download completing.
-
Hello, I recently purchased the Netgate SG-2100 and I have seem to run into a problem when it comes to getting an update to download from Blizzard for the game Overwatch.
When i do the update for the game to get the latest update which is around 30+ Gigs the update goes all the way to 99% on the download and just sits there, any settings i have changed in the SG-2100 have not helped at all. I have done everything i can think of, multiple factory resets ect ect and still can not get this download to finish using the SG-2100.
This problem is unique to the Netgate SG-2100 since i have a Asus router here running FreshTomato and that has never had an issue with any update finishing. When the SG-2100 will not finish the download i can pause that switch the router back to the FreshTomato select the update again and it will complete without issue. I have also tried changing the nics in the computer as in it has two network ports on the motherboard one is Intel and the other Realtek and that also didn't make a different still the update would not complete with the SG-2100.
I have done some searching online on this topic and there is other people that have had this occur before using Pfsense and Overwatch but none of the forum posts i read had any solutions as to what was happening and can it be fixed. Also note this is something that is very specific to the game Overwatch using the Blizzard Launcher if i try and download other updates say for COD Modern warfare 2 and that's also a 40+ gig update that update will complete with no issues so i have no idea whats going on with Overwatch and the SG-2100.
Thanks for your time.

Hmm, ave you actually tried that particular update behind some other router?
Stopping at 99% like that often indicates a download is actually finishing but then failing at the next step for some reason. What error does the client show?
pfSense doesn't hold that file at all it just passes the packets. Do you see any blocked connections in the firewall log?
Do you have a link to anyone else hitting this?

My 2100 and 8200 have no issue downloading Overwatch, maybe some service you have running on your device.
-
@stephenw10 Yes the update in question here works fine i have had the game installed and uninstalled loads of times and under FreshTomato there is no issue, the game plays fine after the update.
One of the forum posts about this is right here...
https://www.reddit.com/r/PFSENSE/comments/usf9fb/require_aid_in_troubleshooting_battlenet_updates/
Another forum post i was reading a bunch of people got together for a lan party and once again they all tried to update the game at the lan party and once again all of them had this issue where the game update would stall at 99% percent. when all the people at the lan party went home they could all update the game on whatever setups they had at home with no issues.
And here is a forum post on Blizzards forum with some one on Pfsence who is stuck at 99% on updates as well.
https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/blizzard/t/updates-stuck-at-99-on-pfsense/35459
And before others ask yes we tried to open the ports for the Blizzard Launcher and we even tried UPNP to have that on and it was the same deal nothing would solve the issue. This router is running whatever the current version is on the Netgate SG-2100 and when i was trying this everything was pretty much default settings i didn't add any services to the router and i wasn't using anything like Pfblocker.

@negan I'm not surprised, when i was testing my SG-2100 and the update was failing i was doing this with a buddy who is in the UK and he runs Pfsence in a virtual machine for his setup and he was able to get the update for the game and there was no stalling at 99%.
So there is something very specific i think going on with this update and the equipment here but after all the time we spent trying to trouble shoot this i need to find a solution or send the router back for a refund because it's clearly no good the way its working right now.
Also on a side note i did send Netgate a support ticket about this and that was on last Thursday and i haven't heard anything from them on this.
-
You have the ticket number I can review?
-
@stephenw10 Nope i hit the send on the form page for that and off it went never heard back but it mentions this issue in the ticket and was sent on Thursday.
I tried to email support at netgate and that come back saying they don't handle support like that anymore and that you have to use the ticket system so i did just that.

@netgateuser0001
From that other forum:
“But as soon as I unplug my router, and connect my laptop to the Modem it instantly changes from 99% to 100% and is playable.”If taken literally as written that sounds like they move the cable during the download. That would typically interrupt a download so also implies it is complete? Unless maybe it’s torrenting or similar?
I would have suspected a/v…
Is the 99% in a browser or in the game? If a browser it’s not uncommon for the browser or an a/v plugin to scan the file before completion.

@netgateuser0001 I cannot find any submissions from your email address that you used to open your forum profile. Did you use a different one?

Especially on a large download. SHA checks against those files take time.

It could also be that your public IP changes when you switch routers and it's somehow getting blocked?

@rcoleman-netgate No itw as the same e-mail address as this forum account.

@steveits it might not mean he moved the cable during the download, It could be saying that once the download sits at 99% its not downloading anything to start with and you can see this on the traffic monitor / graph thing on the Netgate SG-2100 you can see what looks like a hand shake going on every once in a while but nothing else, the download is basically done but the very last part there must be an issue.
I have also tested this with the launcher sitting at 99% i have left it sitting there trying to complete and then swapped the SG-2100 out for the FreshTomato router and i seen the same thing the download completed right away.
I have gone further then that as well as in making sure the Blizzard client got reloaded and even numerous reboots of windows 10. and the situation plays out the same regardless of what you do in regards to the Blizzard Launcher and that is with the SG-2100 in place the update does not complete and with FreshTomato router in place it does right away.
As for the Blizzard Launcher who knows what tech they are using like i said COD Modern Warfare 2 installed a bigger update in terms of size and it didn't hang at all.
I don't see how this is an IP being blocked issue since again everything here has been off and on numerous times and once again the FreshTomato router has zero issue at all with the update. I also don't see how it would have anything to do with a file hash since if that were the case surely with the FreshTomato router in place that delay would be there as well and it's not.

and the response i got back was the following..
Hello!
Thank you for contacting Netgate. This message is to inform you that we have recently changed ticket systems in order to better serve you. As a result, the ticket you recently submitted will not be received.
In order to submit a ticket to our TAC team, please visit https://www.netgate.com/tac-support-request
Thank you!
I followed that link your email had in there and filled out the info and sent it off so i have no idea why you didn't get it.

@rcoleman-netgate it was support@netgate.com the message i got back is in the post below.

Any chance this is an IPv6 issue? Does your ISP provide any sort of v6 connectivity?
What is sounds like is the client tries to contact something else when it finishes downloading, to verify the download perhaps, and fails. If that host resolves to a v6 IP that might cause it.
You might also be able to see it trying to make connections in the state table when it's sat at 99%. Since replacing the router allows it to complete it appears it will just keep trying. You should be able to see those attempts.Steve

@stephenw10 No i don't think it's an IPv6 issue that's disabled on freshtomato router and i disabled that on the SG-2100 as well and i don't think my ISP supports it.
I just re submitted the ticket again and its the same e-mail address as this forum account i sent it out at about 8:14pm EST.

@stephenw10 Also on a side note here about the IPv6 i'm using bell fiber here in Canada and so i'm using the sfp port on the SG-2100 on my asus router running FreshTomato i connect to its WAN interface with a tp-link media converter and that works good for the fiber connection.
However one thing i did notice was on the SG-2100 when using the sfp port and using PPPoE for the connection to my isp if the Ipv6 was even enabled i could not connect to them at all. Once i disabled that everything worked fine and i had normal internet access.
