For the first time in a long while I went into the package manager for a quick check. To my surprise the list of Available Packages is completely empty... My VM is running 23.09.1 but my second system (site) running on 2.7.0 currently, is also showing an empty list. Is there something going on with the servers or am I missing something else here?

Empty for your 23.09.1 or the 2.7.0 ?
Just checked, and the list did you show up.

The 2.7.0 : easy : check one of the 'very many' posts about that the very same subject : https://forum.netgate.com/category/16/pfsense-packages : it's full of 'can not see the packages, nothing is listed'.
But be aware : you really should not install/update while using an old pfSense. The most recent version is 2.7.2, upgrade pfSense first before even looking at the pfSense packages.
But I get it : System > Update > System Update doesn't propose an upgrade neither ....

Edit : and where are the logs ??

@Gertjan I know about not updating plugins on old releases, I just happened to check and discovered this...
And it's empty on both systems, and they show

Hmm, seems like the clock is off on the 2.7 system... but regardless, I have never had the lists being empty...

            When you go here :

you can't select / see that "2.7.2" is current neither ?

@Gertjan Yes I can select 2.7.0, 2.7.1 as well as 2.7.2 but it doesn't matter, no change...

              7c62f753-d005-4c70-9549-b2f9946feff7-image.png

On the system which is on 23.09.1 however, I can't select anything from that page...

              a6ca9a08-1585-4a47-8c08-bcbfff3a8beb-image.png

BUT, that thing I can see now must be related to the licensing.... I run this at home on a VM since way back and I just noticed the license has expired. So I guess the only way forward here would be to convert to CE?

I still don't see why I shouldn't be able to get the package list, and install additional packages, even if I can't update to a newer version??!

                pfSense Plus (23.09.1) needs a license :

                227a26b1-6793-4325-9cc4-288c488c06bf-image.png

without license : get 2.7.2, this means : re install. But, you have a VM, so that's an easy one.
AFAIK, you can retrieve the current config settings.

@Gertjan Yes, and I have had a license since back when it became available for Home+Lab, but it apparently expired and there are no free options available anymore... :(

Still don't understand why the package list is empty?! Can't see any mentioning of that anywhere:
                  https://www.netgate.com/blog/addressing-changes-to-pfsense-plus-homelab
What Happens to my Current Install of pfSense Home and Lab?
If you currently have pfSense Plus Home+Lab installed, you can continue to use it. As we continue the transition away from the free version of Home+Lab, the ability to get timely updates with bug fixes and improved features may be limited and would require a TAC subscription. If you need to reinstall your Home+Lab version, we will be unable to provide a no-cost upgrade path from pfSense CE.

Clearly no updates or bug fixes, but but why remove all the packages that already exist for 23.09.1 ?? Is that really intended or am I the only one with this issue?

And the problem still remains on the 2.7.0 site however... why am I not seeing any packages there?
That site is our summer house which is a few hours away, and I'd rather not run a full upgrade to 2.7.2 until I'm physically there...

The pfSene Plus without license : you need the license to connect to package update system. No license means : no connection, and that can explain the empty package list.
Please take note : I presume it works like this (i'm just a pfSense user like you), and what I make of it while reading this.

The CE 2.7.2 is not the same product, and is free.

I've found "Issue with going from 2.7.0 to 2.7.2" which has probably a solution for you.

                      @Gblenn https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/releases/2-7-1.html#troubleshooting

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

Send me your NDI from the 23.09.1 install in chat and I'll check it.

You may be right that there is no connection to the package update system without a license. But then I think it needs to be added to the current statement which sais: "the ability to get timely updates with bug fixes and improved features may be limited".
I don't really see that it would be necessary to remove the packages in order to limit updates?

BTW, the solution provided by SteveITS was also in the thread you found... so thanks for finding the link.
