Is pfSense Community Edition abandoned?
-
Get Plus it is amazing with all the extra features, cloud backups, boot environments, packet flow data, the ability to get tac support for basic stuff.
-
@joshgreyz FYI: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/development/release-schedule.html

Its really amazing that we have these kind of threads almost every 6 months. @stephenw10 - you should create a compilation of "pfSense CE is dead / abandoned" threads for public shaming.

Check the source: https://github.com/pfsense/pfsense/commits/master/
Last commit was yesterday.
While thatโs true none of that has been available to users for a long time.
Open source which can not be open source compiled, nor is a compiled version available is not open source.
Software with private documentation suggesting changes but not public access nor any plans for public access is also effectively not being updated.
Netgate action indicates the CE version is being killed as rapidly as they are able to.

@Patch I suspect you're trolling here but I'll play along
your reference to a "long time" doesn't stand up to facts.
CE 2.7.2 was released 8 months ago in December 2023.The System Patches package v2.2.11 released 2+ months in May 2024 included updates for CE

Imo there is a discrepancy between Netgate openly stated position and actions.

Access to any v2.8 development snapshots have been disabled both within v2.7.2 and via https://www.pfsense.org/snapshots/ since late 2023. for further information see When will the CE 2.8.0 Development Snapshot be available? Sorry I don't have an exact date but access to v2.8 has been blocked for a "long time" compared to "Last commit was yesterday". It has been blocked for almost 2 major releases of the plus version.
The facts as I interpret them is Netgate is unofficially killing the CE version as fast as they are able to. The implications for new projects planning to use the CE version is put the time into a different software package (OPNsense if an open source product is desirable, consider the plus version if not). The implications for systems using the CE version is start planning a replacement as CE is end of life.

@Patch
Opensense is too far behind. I would not even consider them. I want to be on the latest FreeBSD which is 15. Opensense is barely to FreeBSD 14 way behind.Negate will figure out what they need to do to stop the Copyright pirates and then I will go with it. You just need to wait.
-
@Patch while a free CE version did lead me to pfSense 15+ years ago, the project being open source is not a determining factor you me using pfSense. I want good software that works for me. Proprietary/Open/Free/Paid software are all in play for me.
Based on your understanding of the facts you have stated a path forward for your new projects. You don't agree with how the project is run. Okay. So why start this forum thread? How is this discussion productive? Move on.

@ahking19 & @coxhaus
Your points do not change the fact Netgate is making the CE edition end of life (which is the subject of this thread).Nor do your points change the appropriate options available to users: plan moving to a non EOL open source product such as OPNsense (for those users and developers who value open source) or move to one of the close source products for those users for which open source & the associated community is a low priority).
-
@Patch You have no idea what is going to happen in the future for Pfsense. I don't either. They are trying to stop the Copyright pirates so I don't think they will be handing out code until they figure it out.

Long term removal of all access to the run time for v2.8 is not method of piracy control, it is a method of accelerated killing the CE version.
