Hard Drive Install on X-6000

I just got everything setup last night. Here is part of the startup:

Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ufs/pfsense1So now what do I need to do? I am I going to have to create special partition for everything to work?

I am totally confused now. I got two IDE 2.5 hard drives one 20 GB and one 40 GB. I have installed the 20 GB installed in my x-500 and the 40 GB in the x-6000. Both are doing the exact thing. I using a 2.0 RC 3 build CD. I am doing a custom install. I getting a mismatch in the number of heads and sectors.
When the server boots and it always comes up to the mount prompt. I have looked through the forums and on line in and can't figure out the what I am missing. I looked as many different fstabs.
Here is my process to install:
1. Connect to HD to computer via USB case
2. Turn computer on and select F12 for one time boot menu
3. Select CD/DVD and hit enter
4. Follow installation and complete the build process. If I change the heads or cylinders it will not accept the change. It forces you to expand the to the full size before it will continue.So I am back to the begining a reboot does not help. The mount command shows up. I have tried everything possible. I know it has got to be the fstab configuation. I really like to send out the x-500 with my brother and get the x-6000 so we can create IPSEC tunnels for secure file tranfers.
I did find a capacitor on the systemboard that the top is slightly raised. All of the others are perfect. I am going to keep a eye on that one.
I really would like to get my two systems up with hard drives. This has turned out to be one of the hardest things that I have every tried.

Is there a word missing between expand the and to the full size?
So I am back to the begining a reboot does not help. The mount command shows up. I have tried everything possible.
Take heart. You almost certainly haven't yet tried everything possible. :)
Did you attempt the reboot with the hard drive connected by USB or connected to an IDE socket?
I presume by "mount command shows up" you mean the warning that the startup can't find the root filesystem.
From which disk is the startup trying to mount the root file system? Often its possible to get the startup to proceed by telling it the correct filesystem. (Note that your fstab you displayed earlier is from a nanobsd install rather than a full install. Here's the fstab on my 'full install' 2.0-RC3 pfsense which has been upgraded multiple times from a :```more /etc/fstab

I have tried the full version & embedded version on the two different functioning hard drives. I have tried the one in the x-500 (20 GB) and the x-6000 (40 GB). Both yield the same result. They will not mount the disk properly. This is with the the flash drive removed.This is the error I am getting.

If you have invalid mount options, reboot, and first try the following from

and then remove invalid mount options from /etc/fstab.

To clarify when I loaded the both the drives, I had to give the disk size, in sectors. I make the default size smaller that using the full size of the disk. The next screen that shows up forces you to use the maximum size of the disk. From there I created the mount points and installed the rest of the pfSense.
Disconnected the hard drive from the usb adapter and then connected it to powered off x-6000. I removed the flash drive and started the system up. I gave the above error message, that I am getting on the x-500 & x-6000. I pop my flash drive back in and it works fine as well as now offering me the choice of booting slice 1 or slice 2 and the hard drive.
I am really trying to read the forums and look at my book(ultimate Guide to Pfsense). I am no unix/linuix guru. I know I could use a different product but I have been using it so long I have no desire to change products. If somebody has a disk image of a working x-6000 on hard drive and they are will to make a disk image I will ship a drive to you or even download it via some method.
I even do a crossloop session with somebody if they are willing to give me a hand. I getting to point of great frustration. On top of that I found a capacitor that is slightly raised in my x-6000. Look's like I will be doing repair surgery once I order a capacitor. I trying to get on a HD so that I can doing additional monitoring and get people out. My daughters computer got hacked. I caught it in time before any damage was done but they trashed her machine.
I spent the better part of 30 + hours reading building and rebuilding the disks and my firewall just to try to get the HD working. I trying to get as data out to the forum as possible.

I'd suggest the the problem is that the disk is changing name between the time you install the software and the time you boot from the disk. The name change is because you change the point of connection of the drive (usb to ide).
Your dmesg output shows:```

When you see the prompt```
mountroot>> usf:/dev/ad2s1a and the boot should proceed. Then you will probably have to login and edit /etc/fstab to change _da0_ to _ad2_ on two lines (one for the root filesystem and one for the swap space). Reboot and verify the system comes up without manual intervention.

I have learned alot from this. I still got a ways to go with linux. So far it is working with the x-500. I make the big change tonight with the x-6000. That is my primary firewall. I glad that it was simple. I guess when you only work with ms products on a day end and out basis translation between O/S's gets difficult.Many Many thanks.
From my experience this write on how to add a hard drive might be good to add in for manual for watchguard one of the users is writing.

Glad you got it working.
I still got a ways to go with linux.
To help avoid future unpleasant surprises: pfSense is built on the FreeBSD operating system, which is similar to Linux in many area (for example, it is possible to run quite a number of Linux programs on FreeBSD) but is quite different in other areas (device names, disk partitioning and more)

I been on vacation but still tinkering. As far as the HD installation it has been a total bust. I planning a second attempt next week. What I found out so far is that you have to have a flash card in the x-6000. It modifies the boot files and adds the HD as disk 5 in the boot order.So I trashed to HD in the process. I have to format and remove all partitions and clean them up before I can do anything else.
My last attempt end a complete disaster. I learned a few tricks and I think I be able to complete my installation. I keeping notes and should be able to post my results.

I have finally gotten around to trying to re-install a hard drive in my x-6000. When PFSense boots it comes up with 1 - PFSENSE, 2 - PFSENSE, 5 - HDI select HD and it does not do anything except site there like a lump on a log. I waited a full five minutes. Do you have any Ideas what could be causeing this issue. My we need to get a few active packages running. My 13 year old got into some contect she she should not have by accident. I need to install a few packages.
ANy help would be benefitical.

Here is what I just completed, I took 2 ide laptop and loaded it with the base 2 pfsense beta 3. I select disk5 to boot. It just hanges and never even boots.
I am have stuck, any thoughts??

The standard FreeBSD bootmanager lists the bootable drives and waits a few second for a response then boots the drive last booted if no response. From memory, it looks for a "Fn" key (e.g. F1, F2 etc) rather than a numeric key (1, 2 etc). I wonder if you are booting into the FreeBSD bootmanager.
From the dmesg output you posted earlier I presume you are installing the embedded version of pfSense. (I didn't see a VGA device in the system startup output.)
I'm not familiar with the peculiarities of the X-6000. It is not clear me what you have done (what you installed on the CF, what you installed on the hard drive and how you installed them) nor what version you want to run (full or embedded).
What happens if you hit the F1 key as soon as that output appears? F2 key? F5 key?

Going from 2gb to full installation on a 40 hd. I give the function key a try when I get home.

Sorry to see your still having trouble. :(
I only ever tried booting from HD on my X6000 as a test, I never did a full install. However if I remember correctly I had to have a CF card in the slot in order to boot from HD. Some bios bug perhaps.One other thing you might try is to load a CF card with a memstick install image, boot from that and then install to the HD from there. That would require serial console access from the memstick image though, I don't know if that's present.

I am working on my watchguard. I have relized that you have to have a flash card in the slot. Now I have 2 partions on the FC. The HD is a full base build. I going from embedded to Full installation.
Is there a way bypass the auto startup and so that I can specify the volume that I want to boot from??

If i select the hard drive it constanly tries to start.
dev/da0s1a is a USB connected drive (or a SCSI drive).
But your boot drive is ad2 (a drive connected through an IDE controller) hence the startup should be showing

Since I know that the HD was formatted it comes up at da0 but once installed in the x-6000 it shows up as ad2s1a. I trying to mount the disk so that I can modify the /etc/fstab and correct the name of the HD. I can't get the mount command correct.
Here is what I am using:
mount -rw -t ufs -o /ad2s1a /mnt/tmp/With no luck.

Try mount -rw -t ufs -o /dev/ad2s1a /mnt/tmp/ and it it doesn't work report back with the mount command the system response.
