OpenDNS on pfSense breaks Windows Remote Desktop on local LAN

  • I've used GoogleDNS and it is working fine, used ISP DNS and works fine as well.

However, OpenDNS on pfSense breaks Windows Remote Desktop on local LAN

    My setup is simple:

    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

w/ Unchecked - Allow DNS server list to be overridden by DHCP/PPP on WAN.

And then I cannot access servers thru Remote Desktop.

I do not have an OpenDNS account, just simply wish to use their DNS services.  Whereas others will return a NXDOMAIN, OpenDNS will redirect me to their "guide.opendns.com".

I guess this is just one of those DNS vs NetBIOS issue, where DNS takes precedence.

Is their a good way for me to resolve this issue?  Anyone else using OpenDNS and also have this issue?

  • You can turn on NXDOMAIN responses in OpenDNS. Or fix your DNS so it'll resolve local hostnames correctly, which is the better solution given that's what current Windows versions expect.
