Sky Fibre to the Cabinet Rollout - PfSense support?
-
thank you for your fast response. I managed to get it working with the ECI modem provided from BTO.
however my hacked huwaei hg612 is not working. ive posted this question on skyuser forum. I will cut and paste here for a clearer understanding.
good news my suspicions were correct.
So I had been using my hacked Huwaei HG612 previously with my sky unlimited and it was working absolutely fine and the settings I had were correct as posted above.
eventually after exploring all avenues. I thought to myself why dont i try plug in the ECI modem that the engineer originally installed and see if that makes a difference.(ie chipset/cabinet compatibility)
So that's what I did. Plugged the ECI modem in and voila my firewall/router automatically picked up the dhcp address with the new username|password I extracted from the new hub, I have also tested it with the old username and password from my sagem router and it also picked up a dhcp lease and ip.
so I guess the issues are the following:
huwaei modem chipset is not compatible with the cabinet
the modem configuration settings that I have been using up until now with unlimited, don't work for fiber. The first point seems the most likely but it just doesn't make sense. That would mean BTO had a monopoly on hardware to be used for fiber.
Again I cant confirm this point because I don't have access to the cabinet hahaha.I'm hoping its the second point and someone can shed some on what the corrects settings are to be used with fibre.
obviously im not going to chance it and hack the eci for the sake of line stats, however it would of been nice to use my Huwaei HG612.
I just need someone to confirm the above before I put it on fleabay
I suspect you have the modem configured incorrectly.
Have you used it before on another connection?I'll have to re-read this whole thread, I seem to have forgotten most of it! ::)
There is probably new information at the original linked website also.Steve
Edit: Ok, read it! Were you using the HG612 on your previous adsl2+ connection? Have you reconfigured it to use vdsl? Have you hacked the HG612 Sky/Openreach provided you with or is it a different one? What router have Sky supplied you?

Yes my hacked one.Have you reconfigured it to use vdsl?
Yes just changed the modulation to vdsl2 and left everything the same ie vpi/vci. dont know if this is the problem and it needs alteringHave you hacked the HG612 Sky/Openreach provided you with or is it a different one?
yes i bought a hg612 off ebay and hacked it because i want to have line stats etc/ but i also have the eci one provided by BTO and that works fine as mentioned in above postWhat router have Sky supplied you?
Sky have supplied me with the new sky hub SR101, but i have managed to sucessfull extract the username|password using wireshark and it works fine with pfsense+eci modem bto provided however not with the hacked hg612 modem. So i think my huwaei settings maybe incorrect ?

So i think my huwaei settings maybe incorrect ?
I agree. It should be standard config across all providers, Sky, BT etc so I would imagine it's well documented on the HG612 hack site.

thanks. I thought it might have been. I will have a look on the huwaei hack site and see what i can find. but for the mean time its working perfect with the eci modem.

tried looking but no luck. i am assuming your not using a hacked modem ?
-
No, my BT supplied HG612 is still locked down.

i think i need to search them web abit more then. is there anyway to access the settings via telnet/ssh ?
does sky use atm or ptm for its connection ?
-
got it working.
done some more diggin. Fiber use PTM connection not ATM
and VLAN is required to establish connection.
here is a screenshot of the settings if anyone needs them for the future or decides to use a hacked huwaei modem or any other alternative modem.
what I am interested to know from the pfsense gurus is vlan 802.1p. i have set it to default 2
but i have noticed when googling there are 7 values each with different priority. which is the best in terms of performance ?PCP Priority Acronym Traffic Types
1 0 (lowest) BK Background
0 1 BE Best Effort
2 2 EE Excellent Effort
3 3 CA Critical Applications
4 4 VI Video, < 100 ms latency and jitter
5 5 VO Voice, < 10 ms latency and jitter
6 6 IC Internetwork Control
7 7 (highest) NC Network Control -
Ah good stuff. :)
I have no idea about 802.1p, or no more than is revealed by a quick Google: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_P802.1p
You might think that setting it to a higher level would give you priority over other users. However it may also screw things completely or have engineers are your door in seconds!
Since everyone else will be at 2 there would be no need to go higher than 3. Wait until a busy time when your connection speed has slowed and try it. ;)
Most likely it will do nothing at all and is just an option provided by Huawei that's unused by BT/Sky.I keep meaning to get a second modem to hack. This may be the final trigger.
