I've recently performed a successful upgrade to 2.1 (thanks for the great work!) and all is well, except that my dashboard displays "Obtaining update status…" forever.

In "firmware / updater settings," the pull-down is visible, and I can choose "... stable updates (Current architecture)", but when I then click "Save", the pull-down reverts to the top-most (blank) choice, and I still have "Obtaining update status..." on the dashboard.

        Did you follow jimp's steps?

After the upgrade happens and you are on 2.1-RELEASE, the default URL there will be the stable updates, so you can then uncheck "Use a URL server for firmware upgrades other than www.pfsense.org" at that point in time.

Yes. I tried it with the box checked and with the box unchecked. In neither case did it retain my pull-down choice; it always reverted to the blank choice.

You can always download the correct update, put it in your computer files and then use that file to upgrade.

Perhaps much easier than all this.

I tried again just now, and the behavior has changed.

If I choose "pfSense … stable updates (Current architecture)", and (contrary to jimp's instructions) leave "Use a URL server for firmware upgrades other than www.pfsense.org" checked with "Base URL" set to "http://updates.pfsense.org/_updaters", my dashboard now says "You are on the latest version."

Do I have it set properly now (even though I have the box checked that jimp said to leave unchecked)?

You need to leave the box checked ONCE to get the URL saved. After that, does not matter.

OK, that explains what's happening; thanks!
That little bit of user interaction probably should be made a little more clear…
