      Hello everybody

I was able to install pfSense 2.1 onto a WatchGuard x750e box using a 100GB disk (Toshiba MK1031GAS, worked like a charm). But now I'm stuck with mountroot>. As suggested in https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/PfSense_on_Watchguard_Firebox#Booting_from_HD_3, i tried to mount ufs:/dev/ad1s1a, but the OS don't accept it. When entering "?", the box gives me the following list of GEOM managed disk devices: ad1 ad0s1 ad0. But same here, i not able to mount any of them.

Does anybody know if the partitioning scheme has been changed with pfSense 2.1?

      Thanks

The CF slot in the X750e is always the primary master (ad0) so it's recommended you have the HD set as primary slave (ad1) in case you have a CF card in  the slot. If it's set to cable select it should come up as slave anyway. It looks like you don't have that and your drive is set asl master. I would expect the correct line to be:

        ufs:/dev/ad0s1a

Interesting that it shows ad0 and ad1 though.

The partitioning scheme may have changed under 2.1 if you have SATA drives that are now correctly seen in AHCI mode. They may now appear as ada0 etc. This has caught out some people upgrading. The X750e isn't using SATA so not worries there.

        Steve

Steve, thanks for the fast reply :)

Everything has been done the way you described it. CF card is master (still in the slot) and HDD is set to slave (with jumper). I tried ufs:/dev/ad0s1a as well, but without success.

Hmm, Ok. Well 100GB is somewhere between the 40GB drive I used and the 120Gb drive that worked perfectly. The drive geometry is key here but quite what is required is unknown.
Did you choose 'verbose boot' at the boot loader menu?
Try to log the startup messages and post them here. The details of the detected drives should show what's happening or not happening.

It's not so much the size of the disk as the geometry. That's the reason you have to set the heads to 2 to boot larger CF cards. Some bug in the BIOS code calculates something wrong.

                ad1: 0 sectors [0C/16H/63S] 16 sectors/interrupt 1 depth queue</toshiba>

0 cyclinders looks bad!  ;) That's then followed by loads of 'NID not found' errors which indicate trying to read some part of the disk that doesn't exist.

Try setting it as master. Try removing the CF card.

Too bad… same results when using the HDD as master.

I'll check if I can find another HDD and come up with other/better results  ;)

Have you been through the bios setup to allow it to autodetect the disk? What geometry does the bios report?

An 80GB drive has also been confirmed to work without any special measures:
                      http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,56234.msg304473.html#msg304473

I think perhaps only the smaller drives are causing trouble and you should try just detecting the drive. Remove the CF card, set the drive as master, don't use verbose mode.

                        The machine is alive  8)
I had to manually set the HDD mode to "LBA" in the bios. Now everything works fine :)
                        Thanks for hints and support!

                          Excellent.  :)
To help anyone else could you detail what settings you ended up with that worked?
CF card installed, master or slave, verbose mode etc.

The following worked for my setup:

                            • Remove CF card

                            • Set HDD as master

                            • In bios: Select the HDD in "Standard CMOS Features" by pressing enter and set "Access Mode" to "LBA", the rest is set to "Auto"

That's it. PfSense starts in standard and verbose mode.
