Some general questions about using pfsense

  • Just a few general questions, to start I am very familiar with Linux and so freebsd shouldn't be too hard but I have a few questions

    1. How do I access the terminal/command line? The way I have been doing it is by pressing ctrl c to cancel the options  that come up at boot up but then I need to restart the whole machine in order to get those options up again. What's a better way to do it?

    2. How do I properly shutdown? I have tried shutdown -h now as that is the command for Linux but it doesn't shutdown the computer, pfsense outputs the system is haulted and then asks to press a button to restart but nothing happens.

    Menu Item 8 on the console or enable ssh and ssh in as root.  When you're at a shell just exit (^D) and you'll get a menu again.

    Diagnostics->Halt System

    shutdown -p now

    FreeBSD manual pages: https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi

    Use FreeBSD 8.3 for pfSense 2.1 and FreeBSD 10.1 for pfSense 2.2.

    thank you kind user!

  • And remember that the whole configuration is done from the webGUI. It might be handy to look at some logs, conf files etc from the command line, but everything is generated by the config entered through the webGUI. Don not (and there is no need to) edit stuff (conf files, change interface settings…) from the command line, those changes will be overwritten the next time pfSense re-creates them.
