[SOLVED] pfSense 2.2(.1) crashing regularly
-
I just want to update this thread.
After rolling back to 2.1.5 I noticed that it was still crashing every now and then (although not anywhere near as much as with 2.2.2). I've come to the conclusion that it must be something with my system.
I'm replacing the motherboard/cpu/memory this week with new hardware and will try install 2.2.2 again and see if that helps.
Thanks for all the feedback so far.

Thanks for keeping everyone updated with your progress.
I didn't notice anywhere if you've tried replacing the power supply in this system?
If you're trying to eliminate possible causes of the crashes due to hardware, it's worth a try to eliminate the PS as well.Just my $.02

Thanks for the tip. I'll see what happens when my hardware gets here. I just have a strong suspicion it is the motherboard as my BIOS settings are getting reset out of the blue sometimes. Let's see what happens.

How old is that MB?
Any chance the CMOS battery is dead and mangling the BIOS at random?

He 'solved' it by reverting to 2.1.5 …. so, not really a solution. Found that it still crashed with 2.1.5, though not as often, so now he's evaluating HW problems / solutions.
My vote is for a dead 2032 cmos battery, dodgy power supply dropping the 'power good' signal, or (least likely) a short from MB trace to case. I've seen all three cause these symptoms.
Again, thanks for following up, looking forward to the solution!

Replaced CMOS battery 3 times already in the past few months. Definitely something up with the board.
My new board arrived this morning. Will test it out tonight.

New hardware in. Fresh 2.2.2 install.
In case anyone is interested, this is the new board: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/D1800B-ITX/
So far so good, I will monitor it and report any more crashes.

Agreed! Something ugly there (unless you had a batch of lousy batteries….. not likely).

Standby - we're almost there, just a little more real world testing needed.
I mean, what could possibly go wrong? ;)

I'm starting to feel positive now.
Uptime 4 Days 00 Hour 10 Minutes 43 Seconds
I'm quite confident though that the issue was with the motherboard.
