Netgate VE 2440 vs Supermicro vs i3
-
Hey guys, i know this type of question gets asked a lot and I have read a bunch of posts, still trying to figure it out. I have 75/10 internet and a full house of PC's, Smart TVs and OpenVPN. What would be my best options for long term?
-
RCC-VE 2440 with 30gb mSATA for just under $600 CDN
-
Supermicro A1SRi-2758f for about $725 CDN
8 gb ram
M350 Case
60 gb SSD
AC/DC power supply -
Gigabyte H170N WiFi LGA1151 for about $650
i3-6100 Processor
16 GB ram
Case
60 gb SSD
Dual Intel PCI Express Network Card
pretty sure everything supports AES instruction set.. Not sure what would be more future proof, want to be ready for 1GB fiber when it comes to our neighborhood.. Any help would be much appreciated. The one thing I like about option 3 is I could use it as an HTPC if I ever get out of PFsense as it has HDMI, 4k, etc.. But it is also the most work putting everything together and order parts from different sources. Don't care a ton about energy cost but space is important as we just sold our house and are moving into a half duplex.
I am also open to any other suggestions. Canadian prices suck and the dollar exchange is pretty bad right now.

nobody has any thoughts? want to order soon as we are moving.

Go for the i3. It will support 1GB WAN throughput and if need be can work as a good HTPC. Install KODI and it will fly.
-
one of the problems with the i3 is what case and motherboard? I need a smaller case but I will need to fit my dual Intel PCIe card in it…

Motherboard: ASrock Z170M-ITX/AC
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129081You need a low profile NIC bracket if your 2 port NIC is a regular size card.
With an additional $50, you can go with Skylake i5. -
that case might fit the bill. would you choose that motherboard over the Gigabyte? do you have it running Pfsense?
-
I have found Asrock to be much better than Gigabyte
-
how much wan and OpenVPN could the RCC-VE 2440 handle?
