@wallabybob: Using internal DNS servers doesn't control where people can go, it only controls the name to address translations. If you know someone's phone number you don't need a telephone directory to call them. actually it does, i can make it to where typing in 'help" in my browser takes you to forum.pfsense.org or if you get a denial page (opendns.org) with a custom dns server one can make it so that certain dns names are redirected. remember the dns flaw that was made public a while ago? this was pointed out… but yes if they know the address its worthless but not many people know help.com's ip (phone #)

Well, apparently the items noted above didn't help as the server dropped offline an hour ago and it looks like my data center has to power cycle it to get it back online. If I install the developer's kernel and get the panic information, is that likely to tell me what the cause is since the system BIOS isn't detecting in the DMI event logs? All this work has a real cost ($135/hour for remote hands at the datacenter) associated with it, not to mention the cost of renting their IP KVM. Edit: The server had rebooted and was hung right after the memory count at POST, so this has got to be a hardware issue. Eff'ing A.

Concurrent connections don't matter so much as total throughput. I'm not sure how much the numbers are reduced once you put traffic shaping on, but when sending in the clear an ALIX box like that can pass through about 80-85Mbit. As far as concurrent connections go, RAM would only matter in terms of state table size, and you can fit ~100,000 states in about 97MBytes of RAM. I'm not sure if traffic shaping adds any more overhead onto that.

@jimp: On the WAN config page there is a field for that in the PPPoE section. ISP changed the PPPoe password on us, called ISP got the correct password, everything works perfect!!! thanks for the help

I wanted to let anyone know who is having this issue that having the option Clear DF bit instead of dropping enabled on both sides of the VPN tunnel fixed the problem for me. There is another fix which I found in my own old documentation I had tried but it only works for the user policies and not computer policies. It has to do with editing the registry. Hope someone else will find this useful.

I've been running with a hard drive to experiment with pfSense and tried 'rate' but the system didn't seem to stay functional for more than 30 minutes while 3 people were running torrents on the network.  There were timeouts on the LAN side resulting in zero traffic passing through.    I rebooted 2 additional times with the same results.    I removed 'rate' and installed both bandwidthd and darkstat.  The system is currently not as stressed but it is fully functional.  They both provide stats, but none as desirable (to me) as 'rate' – although I would prefer to be able to capture the 'rate' data because it flashes by rather quickly. Are there any other 'rate'-like packages that provide relatively real time information on LAN utilization but are more stable? Again, thanks to all for your information. Steve
