Load balancing works for me like a miracle but I really can't make failover work. When I try to remove 1 / 3 of my WANs sometimes I still can access the Internet sometimes I can't. What could be wrong? I set up monitor IPs correctly, I'm pretty sure. I have three modems from the same ISP and I use my ISP's DNS servers for monitor IPs for all the three modems, they are different from each other.

T3 timeouts are usually an indication of ingress or noise on the return path on Comcast's plant. The ingress also can be in your house as well as your neighbors. Some T3 timeouts are normal, but you have many. I would advise a tech visit. Do you experience packet loss as well?? Normal upstream S/N is 28db or better and minimum 32 or better for Downstream C/N. You can ping Comcast's CMTS(if responds to pings) overnight and see if you have sporadic pings or packet loss.

I've also noticed something weird…if i set the server to use dhcp for one of the ip's it allows me to connect to it from the wifi subnet, if i don't it wont.. What's weirder still is that lets say i set static dhcp to give ip 192.168.1.14 to the server and then manually set 192.168.1.15 and 192.168.1.16 as alias ips I can connect to those ip's no problem, but as soon as i set the server to manually connect via normal static ip none of the ip's work from the wifi subnet (which is 192.168.2.0/24) i'm totally stumped...i've put allow rules for all on both lan and wifi under wifi i have wifinet * * * * lannet * * * * under lan i have the same....what do i need to do to make this work.
  • Can you set both static ip's and use dhcp at the same time?

Yes, you can set this up in the DNS Forwarder configuration.

@GruensFroeschli: Not on pfSense itself. How to set the DNS entries on your computer: https://www.opendns.com/homenetwork/start/computer/ hello - I had the very same prob our friend here is describing, and this tip helped! Thanks much! What I find strange however, is WHY this started to happen all of a sudden. In any case - I hope it doesnt stop working soon like it did for this guys :p Thanks.

Yes, thats exactly what i'm considering. The only thing I'm pondering, is how much latency PFsense has been reducing for me. I know PC sense is made for the purpose of being a router, and so Im almost positive that it beats windows ICS where latency is concerned. But would another linux distro also add more latency is passing on my packets? What do you think? If not, I could simple install Ubuntu (which I'm familiar with) without GUI, and run my irc server /file server from that The question I should ask is; are their any test results that suggest that PFsense provides less latency when used to share an internet connection vs windows for example? I'm concerned about latency because I game. Gratzi

@mddubs: About the Xbox, having an "Open NAT" status compared to anything else is a night and day difference, a must have.  I thought I tried forwarding the thousands of ports necessary and still had a "Strict NAT" status until I enabled uPNP.  I can't remember, maybe I'll look into it again. Interesting. I enabled uPNP for my (borrowed) 360 and it still detected strict NAT. Maybe I was doing it wrong. Anyway, I could be wrong, and you never know until you try, but I really think with the VPN1401 you'll be fine. db

I believe this is the NIC showing up bellow.  It's a D-Link DWL-G520 ath0: <atheros 5212="">mem 0x7ebe0000-0x7ebeffff irq 16 at device 7.0 on pci3 ath0: [ITHREAD] ath0: unable to attach hardware; HAL status 3 device_attach: ath0 attach returned 6</atheros> Yes, that NIC won't be visible because the ath driver wasn't entirely happy with it. You might get further by using a pfSense built on a more modern FreeBSD. Try one of the recent 1.2.3 snapshot builds which can be downloaded from http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_7_2/pfSense_RELENG_1_2/updates/

Could you elaborate on The speed drops when surfing, but not downloading, playing games or playing video of youtube. What speed drops while surfing? The speed of downloads you have running at the same time? If so, from what to what?  Its not clear to me what you are comparing with what.

@tnine: Is it possible to change an existing installation to use the appliance install? I couldn't find anything on that in the docs. If I were to try, this is what I would do. Again, I've never tried and I definitely don't guarantee it will not destroy your existing installation. echo embedded > /etc/platform and then use the firmware update page in the GUI to install the embedded image. As for a new install of embedded, this is not done using the Live CD. You have to download the embedded image then use dd or physdiskwrite to write the image directly to the boot device. These instructions are what you're looking for: http://m0n0.ch/wall/installation_generic.php db
