Quick update: I was able to rescue the config file by forcing read/write operations. I'm going to try RMAing the bad SSD and reinstalling pfsense on a new drive with the old config.

Because it only monitors the link between the pfSense WAN and the gateway. Which means if the ISP has an outage beyond that you don't log that. But also the gateway IP might not respond to ping at all. Or might be configured to drop pings when it's loaded, which could be what you're seeing. If you test pinging to something external from a client behind pfSense when the gateway is showing a loss that would confirm it. Steve

I would expect it to run fine though it will be expensive to run compared with a newer more efficient hardware. And probably loud. I you already have it you're unlikely to offset the cost of buying new in energy saving. Give it a try. Steve

I would look for one of the much older Intel NICs then. Something that predates those features you don't want. The FreeBSD Realtek driver has had issues for a long time. Some versions of that chip will give problems. Others, such as that one in the APU, seem to run fine. Realteks own driver generally performs better with the problem chips versions and that is now available as a package. I have not personally tried that TP-Link card. YMMV Steve

Yes, if you're running IPSec tunnels you will need to stop then start the service otherwise you will end up with excess logging. That shows as numerous bzip processes trying to rotate the logs as they fill. Apply the patch via the System Patches package and reboot. Steve

Are you actually seeing a problem other than that error? It may be just log noise. It's probably some hardware off-loading issue. Make sure everything is disabled (including hardware checksum) in Sys > Adv > Networking. But, yeah, swap out the Realtek NIC if you can. Steve

You can just choose the default (vt100) there. It's only for the installer anyway, it wouldn't affect the resulting install.

Yes. We run them in the Datacenters and generally they work fine. We had to change them for and HP version of the X540T2 instead for optimum stability and speed. They have a hard time running tagged VLANS at line speed using offload algorithms. That caused PSOD on ESXi hosts. So I have around 20 for sale if you need....
