@fastcon68: You got to be picking up stray voltage in the case, that would explain the strange feeling.  Make sure the components in the case are grounded well. RC Check that your AC power connection is grounded and wired correctly - Live, neutral, ground all need to be there!  You can get AC outlet checkers for a few bucks - failing that, see if the symptoms change if you power it from a different AC wall outlet.  If there's a problem on the unit itself then it will be in the AC power adapter, not the motherboard.

I've also used the Zoom 5xxx modems and though the newer ones were better, they used to have some weird quirks like not coming set for the proper default VCI/VPI and you had to set them up manually. We mainly use the external Westell 2100 modems, which could be found cheap in large quantities on eBay last I looked (which hasn't been recently) The Westell 2200 routers are also cheap and when not programmed with a username/password, work like a modem.

I turned off the firewall completely. Yes I already turned off "block RFC1918 subnets". Don't know if this is any help, but I checked that my external IP from windows to USB Modem is 10.x.x.x and external like from dyndns.com it detects it as 110.x.x.x .

Thanks! Turns out, I forgot I had an old PIX 501 in the garage just collecting dust.  After a few minutes configuring it, I was able to repurpose an old device!

I'd recommend finding a board with Intel NIC's too, but if worse comes to worse, you could find a case that would allow for a PCI/PCIe card or one with a horizontal riser card.  I've had good luck here: http://www.idotpc.com/TheStore/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=35

I built some slim pc solutions which is all alluminium with LCD attached. I can get rid of the monitor and have the computer only. If you want to see it you can goto www.tammax.com . Can configure any spec even ION based too. The one on the website is Atom N270, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, WiFi bg, Ethernet 10/100, DVI & VGA and USB 2.0 ports. The LCD monitors range from 15" to 26" . Also there are single touch screen solution with stand or wall mounted. The whole thing is cased in full alluminium which the temp can be cooled efficiently with little ventilation. If I make sales from here I will contribute back to pfsense for each unit sold.

The AR9220 doesn't work at all with FreeBSD, the card won't initialize. I have a couple we were going to use on a project, but ended up going with a different card because the problem wasn't going to be easy to fix and the customer preferred to spend that money on something other than getting the driver fixed.  You'll need to look at an alternate card, or if you're willing to spend about $3K USD to get the driver fixed for the ar9220 in FreeBSD, private message me and we can make that happen.

You should check X700 thread. X500, X700, X1000 and X2500 are same hardware with different licenses. Also i think SSL Core model is same box, but i am not 100% sure.

I'm a long time Checkpoint user, and new-to-PFSense user. The PFS unit will not be swap-replaceable with the CP unit, without doing some setup at the remote end. Typically, the main HQ controls the "enforcement points" configurations remotely. They "push" a configuration file that syncs all them together, so if you swich out the CP unit for PFS, I suspect you'll be getting a phone call from HQ when they don't see the CP unit online anymore. You'd need to co-ordinate with them, and they will need to create a new "compatible device" at their end with the parameters of your PFS unit for the VPN tunnel(s). Be careful about NAT-T. CP handles that well. PFS, well in the next release (R2) it should. 1.2.3 - not so good.

I think what mrbostn was trying to get at is that the Supermicro case doesn't have an interchangeable mobo I/O plate. If you get anything other than the supermicro mobo, you'll have to bust out the Dremel tool :P EDIT: Actually, I was thinking of their "front I/O" mounted cases. That case that was linked earlier seems to have screws that may remove the rear panel. Cool. As far as OS compatibility, I would assume it would be fine. I just made a pfSense box using a Foxconn G41 board (intel based), and it worked great. Good luck!

Most recent version of BIOS. Probably something is wrong with this particular box as I have number of clusters with the same type of hardware and everything is ok with them. Anyway the answer to my question would be "ACPI should be on". Thank you.

Hi all, sorry for crying wolf, but it definitely is not pfSense. I tried 3 cables, and different hardware, and the effect stays the same. Only thing was that it happene immediately after the upgrade. I'm now investigating different paths, but pfSense is – as usual -- running flawlessly Klaus

As many as your slots (PCI or PCIexpress NICs) PLUS as many USB ports as you have (or are prepared to provide through hubs). If you have VLAN capable switches you can use a single port NIC and have as many VLANs as you want (up to at least a thousand). If you want more than a couple of interfaces you will probably find that a good quality VLAN capable NIC with VLAN capable switches will cost less than multiple good quality NICs.
