Thanks guys. I meant open source (free) version of OSSIM. It's still pretty good and I'm quite comfortable with it. I'm planning to mostly use it for SIEM purposes so it being pure IDS won't hurt. I do like pfsense's integration of Snort though :) Already tested it with some nmap scans and scapy. I've also used Security Onion before. I enjoyed with its large number of quite stable packages.

@robi: @robi: debug.acpi.avoid="\_SB_.PCI0.SBRG.UAR1 \_SB_.PCI0.SBRG.UAR2" Just a quick note that this is NOT needed anymore for 2.2-RELEASE Thanks!  Confirmed on my systems that needed this workaround as well, uart0 attaches to acpi0 properly now.

Try to measure your power power consumption with the older hardware. Some use so much power it's not worth using it over buying a new small board that uses 1/10 of the electricity..

Thanks, my IPMI was going to be limited to an admin only net but there's no reason to take chances.

A celeron g1840 stays at 500 mhz under normal usage with gigabit wan, and barely goes to 1000 when doing 90+ MB/s torrenting with 500+ torrents. This is with intel pro 1000 / ct gigabit pci-express cards.

Spoke too soon, the system cannot handle a power failure.  It will boot fine once, then if the power gets pulled, it will get stuck at the boot loader prompt. If I re-do the boot fix it might work again, it might not.  Maybe I have bad cf cards, they are original, 7 years old. Josh

Have you run a memtest to qualify the memory?  Looks like that's only a partial fault message, do you have the rest?

Thanks for all your help, Is this what you mean? Would it be better if I just bought any card with the i350. Thanks for your help, new to pfsense. http://www.ebay.com/itm/39Y6138-IBM-INTEL-PRO-1000-PT-QUAD-PORT-PCIe-GIGABIT-ETHERNET-NIC-SERVER-ADAPTER-/131233334080?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e8e1dc340 Thanks Alec.

The people who develop FreeBSD tend to use a lot of high end hardware because they're mostly sys admins and run real servers and only recently getting decent wifi support. Your best bet for PFSense hardware is Intel and no wifi. Intel CPU Intel NIC AHCI harddrive good to go.

This link might help you out: https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/basic-10gb-setup-for-two-pcs.2105/ It leans towards an inexpensive point to point QDR infiniband setup. Two nics can be had for around $100 ish and connect x-2 support RDMA with the OS(s) you're using. Could save you a bit of money over going 10gbe and it's quite a bit quicker.

Check the logs. I had to set a tunable to prevent excessive stuck beacon errors. A wifi interface will almost always see some errors because it's exposed to random radio interference. You might have some source of RF noise near your box, or in your box. I had to set the antenna carefully because I only one antenna. If it was left at default the range was absolutely terrible. Please give more details on the card. USB, PCI, PCIe? Model number? In general it is not necessary or possible to install drivers in pfSense. In very rare cases there may be a newer driver you can use that's being developed. If it's a Ralink USB NIC you probably have to load the firmware. Steve

@cpatte7372: Just so you're aware I deal with 100s of users each day and I'm often asked the most ridiculous questions, but there is virtue in trying to put yourself in their shoes. There's also virtue in not screaming "WRONG" at the founder of the site you're on and software you're using, who's spent the past 10+ years at this, co-wrote the highly-regarded book on it, presented at conferences around the planet on it, etc. And, of course, I was exactly right. You were running off the live CD and had no storage medium to store the config. How people treat you on online forums is generally a reflection of how you've treated them and approached the thread in general. When you start a thread off yelling "WRONG" at the correct answer, generally things not going to go so well for you. It's pretty clear you should know you were in a bit over your head and should have asked for clarification. doktornotor is always good for a laugh. @kejianshi: (It is rather odd that someone could even get a virtual environment running without knowing this.  Thats why doktornotor thinks you might be trolling us) Yes, this exactly. I was leaning towards a troll at that point in the thread too. Thank you kejianshi for your patience assisting.

@Dragon-Kin: my boss handed me this i need to get pfsense running on this. however it does not detect network drivers, wired or wireless. i know network plumbing. not how to add drivers to the install image.  can anyone help? google has not been helpful on this one, or maby i am terrible at googleing stuff…. hand it back  ;D update and try as per the above posts. try the 2.2 beta, if that fails -> try external usb nics worst case, or another router os such as untangle.
