@RaThek: You're correct, there is thermal pad over CPU and Chipset heatsink. I don't have anything to measure temperature but when touching the case you can't keep hand on it for more then few seconds. For sure it is much more then 45 degrees. BTW which edition of pfSense do you use? Indeed, you'd need to be above 60C if you can't keep your hand on the case. If that helps, I have the 1Ghz cpu version in mine, I'm not sure if those thin clients were offered with multiple cpu choices. I'm currently on 2.1.2-RELEASE, I should probably upgrade…

@rjcrowder: I know this will likely draw out the Intel lovers - but I've used several boards with both Broadcom and modern Realtek NIC's - never had a problem with any of them… Well in this case, only one Realtek is PCI-Express, which I think is a big deal. Realtek already is one of the more common NICs with the least hardware in them, with Broadcom having a decent amount of support and Intel being at least silver or gold standard; having said that, even with a saturated link, this is still only effectively serving one person, so Realtek may be more than adequate for my needs –- it really comes down to what your needs are more than anything else. Also, the Broadcom Dual NIC PCI-E cards are SIIG, so I don't doubt their quality (especially compared to integrated Realtek).

Hello ! I am glad to tell you that with my setup i achieved everything i wanted :) The only problem with the setup is indeed the "Captive Portal" function . When we were having about 1800 clients connected to the network , we had problems with pre-authentication URL redirection - it passes (the Auth) but you get a timeout error on some clients , but when you try again to open some website everything works OK . Thank you all for your help - it was needed and highly appreciated :)

I just got done building a system with this same board. I stuck it in a 1U supermicro chassis with 4gb of ram. It's been real quiet. I'm pretty happy for about $400 out of pocket. @ocpistol: I just ordered a A1SRI-2558F-O SuperMicro Board with a c2558 quad core 15w atom. http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Atom/X10/A1SRi-2558F.cfm Intel pro 2500 120gb hard drive should keep it nice and quick.

Netgear has always been my goto choice for small switches, mostly their 5 and 8 port desktop switches. I have seen one 24 port unmanaged unit fail but it was replaced under their lifetime warranty. Admittedly my experience here is not that large.  ;) It's only their very low end 'partially managed switches that require a windows app, the GS105e etc. Even there they are threatening to include a web interface in future models/firmware: @http://www.netgear.co.uk/business/products/switches/unmanaged-plus/GS105Ev2.aspx#tab-features: Web-based Management (upcoming) I recently moved to D-Link for entry level desktop unmanaged switches as they were available very cheaply. Zero issues so far. Steve

Thanks for reporting back. Yep, it's interesting what you take for granted until it stops working. Sometimes you have to assume nothing!  ;) Steve

I've got an N2800 which is practically the same cpu performance wise…  I've got a peak throughput of 700+ MBps packet inspected.  on a dual gig intel on a 1x pcie slot. cpu temps stay 27 and 34c core 1 core 2 crammed in a 1u repurposed chassis.  its pretty overkill for anything really at home.  but only draws 15W from wall

Is there anything in the bios about enabling or disabling that PCI "slot"?  Any of the pins get bent or anything?

No, I do not have it working.  I was just hopping on ebay right now to order a CA10 and checked this forum again to see if that is the right thing to buy.  My CA2 does boot I just have problems when I try to talk to the network card.  I will let you know how this goes.

Please forget about my post. I must admit that I was completely mislead by my experience with Linux machines complaining about changed MAC addresses.  : Meanwhile I recognized that pfSense contrary to Linux doesn't bother at all about changed MAC addresses and that the problem with the SureBackup testing of my pfSense VM had been caused by a configuration error of SureBackup's virtual lab, which emerged only with this single VM (out of 58 VMs which are tested) and made this VM boot up with only one NIC instead of three - so the prompt for network configuration made perfect sense. The problem is solved now. Thanks for your feedback! Regards Christoph
