      @marzdor

All gigabit needs is plain CAT5, as it predates 5e. If you're only getting 100 Mb, either you have only 2 pairs working or a port is only capable of 100 Mb.

PfSense running on Qotom mini PC
i5 CPU, 4 GB memory, 32 GB SSD & 4 Intel Gb Ethernet ports.
      UniFi AC-Lite access point

      I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...

@jknott I think maybe my WAN port is the issue I unplugged the cable from the WAN and put it in the OPT port and it showed up as 1000

@marzdor That would be an unexpected answer. The 1100 is a switch with VLANs to separate the ports. You could open a ticket with Netgate though.

You said you rebooted…did you Halt and unplug power for 15-30 seconds?

I am confused to why you show 2 wan??

            2wan.jpg

Maybe I am just tired, but that sure doesn't seem right... And its only coming up half duplex as well.. Which is just going to be shit connection even if you were fine with just 100.

Maybe its something related to how you have your switch configured?? I don't have access to 2100 or 3100 at the exact moment. Would have to vpn into work, and my work laptop is off. Or tmrw I can fire up the 3100 I have here.. I need to update it and set it up for use anyway ;)

edit: OK I forgot I had one of the remote sites I could get to remotely.. Without having to vpn into work.

            3100.jpg

Did you configure your switch so one of the interfaces would be part of your wan???

I have only done the initial setup wizard out side of that I have not changed anything

In the wizard I left everything standard just changed
Hostname, switched the default 198.162.1.1 and added dns servers

Not sure why it shows 2 WAN it always has

Two LAN also which is interesting since it only has 3 ports. Perhaps worth resetting to defaults if not much has been set up? Can always restore from backup…

@steveits yeah shows 2 lans as well.. Something is off to me.. I don't have a 1100 to play with but have setup many a 3100.. Which has switch ports, etc..

Maybe its because all the ports are actually switched in sg1100 and none are discrete interfaces??

What I can say for sure that coming up 100 half duplex is not going to allow you to ever see your isp speed in the 200s..

@marzdor it couldn't hurt to do a reset.. Do you have a gig switch to use? Or even a PC to that has a gig interface and validate that the interfaces come up gig on the sg1100

You can plug the port of the sg1100 into a gig switch, or a just plug in to the port on pc or laptop that has a gig interface as well. Just to test if they come up gig..

What is the make and model number of this modem your plugging into?

@johnpoz The TP Link above is supposed to be a gig switch. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, which is why I went to removing power or reset to default configuration. Or open a ticket especially if it’s new.

@steveits but where did he say he tested that? Did I miss that part?

Seems to me he has only actually connected wan to the modem directly.

@marzdor said in Not getting same speed as isp router:

I tried 3 different cables going from the modem into the WAN and all three are showing 100

edit: BTW when doing gig it really should always be auto. If it doesn't come up gig via auto - something is wrong.. And the best course of action is to figure out why auto is not working, hard coding is not a good thing with gig.. Only time you would really hard code a gig interface, is if you didn't want it to come up gig, and wanted it to be only say 100 and not gig.

2 gig interfaces connected to each other should come up gig. If not - one or both of the ports are bad, the cable is bad, or something really wrong with the negotiation.. Its not unheard of specific devices having a problems talking to each other.. That would be the reason of putting a switch in between as a test. This should be rare, but it could be the problem. This is why I would suggest you test if the 1100 interface comes up gig when set to auto when plugged into some other gig device/switch other than the modem.

Even if you only had 4 of the 8 wires in the cable - should still come up 100 full. That its coming up 100 half - that is odd. Any possibility that the modem is set for 100 half? Vs auto?

On the 1100 all three ports are switch ports just configured internally using VLANs. The interfaces widget shows the status of both interfaces and switch ports and that's what you're seeing there. That's expected.

What's not expected is that the WAN port is linked at 100M-HD.
Go to Interfaces > Switches > Ports to check the state and setting:

                          using the same cord
Gig switch -> WAN shows 100
Gig switch -> OPT shows 1000

the modem is Spectrum Advanced Voice Modem I don't think it is a modem issue since I get the 200+ mb down with their router using the same modem

It's linking at 100M-HD when set to autoselect which means it's failing to negotiate a link with the other end and falling back to that.
So either the other end set to a fixed speed/duplex and not negotiating at all or it's failing to negotiate for some reason. Since it should be 1G it's unlikely it would be set fixed. It certainly should not be!
But try setting the WAN port there to '1000baseT <full-duplex>'.

Via what - a wire with a device connected to it? Wireless?

Again test your wan port with something else, or with a switch between..

100 for green or off ;)

@johnpoz If I have the modem connected to their router with a wire I get 200+

I tested the WAN port with a gig switch and it shows 100 HD

The modem is showing an amber light

and yes I want to go from their modem to pfSense and not use their router.

So your switch - this is a 2.5 gig capable switch? From the doc says amber is 2.5gbs connection..

If you can not get gig to your switch from pfsense either. And you know for a fact that your cable is good. Possible something wrong with the port, maybe some pin is bent? Missing.

You should contact support, if they can not walk you through getting gig then would be time for a RMA..

If I had to guess from their typo, green would be gig, amber would be 2.5 and off would be 100..

You never know with these modems - from what it looks like its designed to talk to their router, at 2.5.. They could have some weird negotiation setup..

And what seems odd is showing 2.5 to what I assume is not a 2.5gbps capable switch? But shouldn't matter at all to what pfsense port neg with the switch.. But maybe if its actually a 2.5 capable switch?? Was there a switch model mentioned? Going to go back through the thread.

edit: TL-SG105 sure and the hell not a multi gig capable switch, only capable of 10/100/1000 not 2.5 or 5, etc.

I unplugged the cable from the WAN and put it in the OPT port and it showed up as 1000

Mmm, that in combination with the fact both ports are configured the same starts to look like a problem with the port.
