@azdeltawye At first glance that looks like a simple bad usb cable, ups or possible a usb driver problem. But let's make sure...
First, please post your current nut configuration (Services / UPS / Settings). Also, what type of hardware are you running pfSense on?
Then do the following:
- go into Services / UPS / Settings and select Disabled as your UPS Type. Save the configuration.
- unplug the usb connection to the ups.
- reboot pfSense, and wait for it to fully boot.
- plug the usb connection to the ups back in.
- wait a couple of minutes
- collect and post all kernel messages since boot pertaining to usb in an way.
I am particularly interested in seeing if it continues in a detach / re-attach loop on the usb bus.
After that, you can re-enable nut and start trying different usb cables and usb ports (particularly usb v2 vs usb v3) to see if that affects the behavior. You can also try adding / removing a usb hub (preferably powered).

@azdeltawye So for a couple of minutes, 19:46:44 to 19:48:44, the ups disconnects and reconnects from the USB bus 8 times without any other interaction. Not something to do with nut itself.
Potential causes:
- bad UPS
- bad cable
- bad usb chip
- bug in usb driver
Odds heavily favor the first two potential causes. I generally discount the third option as the 5100 is a pretty tried and true solution. Could be a (new) bug in the usb driver--if a bunch of other folks show up with the same problem that will be indicative.
There are two usb hubs in the 5100, but I don't remember if both ports on the front go to one hub or they are split. Try both for sure--you should be able tell if they are different by looking at the output of usbconfig when the device is connected.
Try using a hub, and try both ports. Try a different cable. Btw, is the cable one of the modular rj ones? Or a regular usb-a / usb-a one?

Yeah, I guess it could be a bad UPS. It is a pretty old unit. However I find it too coincidental that this failure occurred at the same exact time as the upgrade to 23.01...
I did try a brand new USB cable (usb-a / usb-b) and no change. Then I made the dumb mistake of plugging in a USB hub into the 5100 which took down the 5100. I had to cycle power to the 5100 to reboot. Fortunately I'm using ZFS, so it recovered and rebooted without any file corruption issues.
I guess I'll just have to figure out how to use snmp for NUT instead of USB...

@dennypage I can code in C++ just a small amount I took an intro course. I am more fluent in Java and Python. Do you need some code looked at? I am currently a computer science student at Sacramento State University, and I would love to look at this. I currently have jGRASP as an IDE so it can read many different languages. Just tell me the lines you want looked at, and where to find the source code. Plus check out my Java based dynamic database program I wrote the code for it when I was a Java tutor, it is an inventory database of all my son's Hotwheels.

This is a bad sign. Plugging in a usb hub should not take down the 5100. That would indicate either a hardware or an OS issue. If it's reproducible, I would open a ticket with Netgate for assistance.

If you are having problems finding them, you can unplug and replug the ups usb cable to generate the kernel usb entries, followed by re-saving the nut config which will trigger usbhid-ups entries.

I did a full reinstall of pfSense on my Netgate 2100 Max last night and reinstalled the NUT package to see if that helps. I wanted to rule that out. 1hr so far with no issues on a BareMetal install of pfSense 23.01. YEAH!!!!

After a bit more tinkering with various parameters for the NUT USB driver and NUT configuration files, I think I finally found a temporary workaround to the disconnection issue detailed above that is especially prevalent with USB connected CyberPower UPS units after upgrading to 23.01:
I went ahead and disabled UPS polling completely by adding the
interruptonlyflag to the usbhid driver (in the "Extra Arguments to driver (optional)" input box).https://networkupstools.org/docs/man/usbhid-ups.html
I have not had one disconnect now in over 14 hours. The only downside (trade off) is that less UPS information is displayed, but the key information is still there.
I think this points to there being an issue related to polling with these units. I did try various combinations of time values for the polling parameters to see if that would fix the disconnect issue, but no luck so far.

Can you provide a bit more information please? "the UPS daemon is dead" doesn't say what the problem was. I'm looking for system log entries for process "usbhid-ups" and kernel usb.
Also, in your config, the content of "Additional configuration lines for ups.conf" is invalid and should be completely removed. This section is for global directives only, and what you have there conflicts with the package configuration.

I will be very pleased, but also very surprised, if this resolves the issue.
If it does, it would indicate a problem with the prior kernel or nut install. IIRC, you had already complete removed and reinstalled nut, yes?
