ok, do you need 4 ports? do they work with the factory riverbed image?

I don't need four, though it'd be nice, as for the factory image it wouldn't do much because the license had expired. I didn't think to test all the ports before reformatting because it seemed like a given that they'd work. Obviously I had too much faith in the technology.

it looks like pf sees all 4 nics, and that all 4 are the same type.
did the guy who gave it to you use just the 2 that you got working?

make sure everything is clean, ive had some lint/dust stop a device from working, i blew on it with air all over and looked at it very carefully for about 5 min to see if i missed anything, it fixed the problem

if all else fails its a 1.5 GHZ system with two 1 Gbps nics (working) but since the nics are Gbps i wouldnt use it for pf (unless you have a fiber connection) i would use it for freenas or the like.

Can't do a factory restore as I'm using the drive. It's a tiny little box which is why I was going to use it as a firewall, but I could see possibly using it for FreeNAS or such as well. The guy who gave it to me hadn't used it a long time, though he says he only ever used two ports so it's possible it's always had two dead ones. I suppose if nothing else it's running at the moment and has enough active ports to route if I needed it to.

Still, if there are any brainstorms on the other two ports I'd certainly appreciate the input. Thanks @XIII for all the suggestions.

Assigning fxp0 and fxp1 their own static addresses also gives the status "no carrier". Not 100% sure what that means though.

wallabybob may be able to decipher more from the dmesg than i could so he may respond (thought i saw him "making his rounds", also he was the one who thought of that)

                    hope it works out

the no carrier means no connection

Got'cha, hopefully he can shed some light on this, if not I've got a mostly working machine and a few new tricks for installing embedded. Thanks XIII.
