@XIII As I noted above, 1.2.3 ignores the console after boot, but if I need to get the topic moved over to another forum that's fine too. I still need to figure out if this is hardware or software causing the issue.

EDIT: Attempting to get 1.2.3 installed properly through some BIOS nonsense, will list results in a tic.

        1.2.2?
did you try 1.2.3 with the method i stated?
since you used 1.2.3 and it looks like all 4 nics are the one i would say they are bad.

try to make them wan/lan instead of opt if that still doesnt work they may be bad. did the person who gave it to you say everything was working?

@XIII Sadly all I can get from the guy who gave it to me is that "it was working when I used it last" which tells me a whole lot of nothing. I got 1.2.3 working through some blind keyboard magic. Here's the new dmesg output (ACPI enabled)

Assigning fxp0 and fxp1 as LAN/WAN doesn't change them at all, still no link lights. Starting to look more and more like hardware I guess.

EDIT: On a whim I bridged fxp0 and fxp1 to fxp3 (LAN) to see if that would help, now it lists their status as "no carrier" instead of "down."

ok, do you need 4 ports? do they work with the factory riverbed image?

I don't need four, though it'd be nice, as for the factory image it wouldn't do much because the license had expired. I didn't think to test all the ports before reformatting because it seemed like a given that they'd work. Obviously I had too much faith in the technology.

it looks like pf sees all 4 nics, and that all 4 are the same type.
did the guy who gave it to you use just the 2 that you got working?

make sure everything is clean, ive had some lint/dust stop a device from working, i blew on it with air all over and looked at it very carefully for about 5 min to see if i missed anything, it fixed the problem

if all else fails its a 1.5 GHZ system with two 1 Gbps nics (working) but since the nics are Gbps i wouldnt use it for pf (unless you have a fiber connection) i would use it for freenas or the like.

Can't do a factory restore as I'm using the drive. It's a tiny little box which is why I was going to use it as a firewall, but I could see possibly using it for FreeNAS or such as well. The guy who gave it to me hadn't used it a long time, though he says he only ever used two ports so it's possible it's always had two dead ones. I suppose if nothing else it's running at the moment and has enough active ports to route if I needed it to.

Still, if there are any brainstorms on the other two ports I'd certainly appreciate the input. Thanks @XIII for all the suggestions.

Assigning fxp0 and fxp1 their own static addresses also gives the status "no carrier". Not 100% sure what that means though.

wallabybob may be able to decipher more from the dmesg than i could so he may respond (thought i saw him "making his rounds", also he was the one who thought of that)

                            hope it works out

the no carrier means no connection
