How is everybody doing? Ive been having a hell of a time trying to get pfsense to load to my CF cards. I even went out and bought two new 4g scandisk CF. and have tried everything i have read in fourms. Is there anyway some would be willing to help be out? Maybe send me the links to the things i need, i have no clue what im doing wrong so any help would help alot.
Thanks

It might help if you said what you are doing, the sort of system on which you are doing and what is reported when you do it. At the very least, that will help someone tailor instructions to what you have readily available rather than what you don't have available. It won't help you very much if I write extensive instructions for writing the cards on a Linux system and all you have is a Windows system.

Have you read this?:
http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/HOWTO_Install_pfSense#Embedded_.28Compact_Flash.29_InstallationThere is also a GUI version of physdiskwrite linked to here.
It's slightly complicated by the fact that it's in German! You can also use Win32diskimager as recommended by JimP, however you'll have to extract the image first.
What's not working for you?

So i open the physdiskwrite select my CF, i see the command prompt, it ask what disk i want to select i slect the disk, cnat open because its a 4g CF,so then i i select remove the two gig Restriction when i check that box the command prompt flashes for about 1 second. So i dont know whats going on. Im using a windows 7 box. with a scandisk 4 gig CF card.

I take it you are using PhydiskwriteGUI?
Since you are using Windows 7 you must run it as administrator (a normal user with admin rights is not enough). What is the exact name of the image you are writing?
Steve
-
Ive try physdiskwrite gui, they command line all running with admin rights, im trying to use this file pfSense-2.0.1-RELEASE-4g-i386-nanobsd.img.gz
-
Hmmm, I don't have Windows 7 (or Vista) so I have no experience trying to use that OS. It's important to realise though that it seems a user with admin rights is not the same as Administrator. Can you use any other machine to transfer the image.
You might want to use: pfSense-2.0.1-RELEASE-2g-i386-nanobsd.img.gz
This smaller image is guaranteed to fit on your card.Steve

So i got the file to write to CF using xp, but in putty nothing shows up is the serial port noth working?
-
The serial port should work without any further action. You have to have putty set to 9600 8 N 1.
If you boot the Watchguard CF card the serial port runs at 115200 instead.
Or do you mean after the initial setup?

So i got the file to transfer to CF, Then i go and try to connect using putty, hyperterminal and dont see anything on the the screen, the lcd light is on but showing nothing and the power light is orange and the arm button is red! Dont know what else to do any help would be great.
Thanks

Do you know this box is fully functional?
Does it boot the Watchguard CF card successfully?
Can you see the Watchguard OS boot sequence at 115200?Steve
-
yes the box works, i had M0no0wall on it and wanted to try something new!
-
ive tried connecting with a 9 pin male cable to the port on my computer with a male 9 min and a keyspan to the db9 cable and get nothing, is theere a special cable firebox wants you to use?
-
No it's a standard serial port with a standard null modem cable.
Did the serial port work with m0n0wall? Have you changed any other part of the setup? Different computer, different putty version etc?
If it worked with m0n0wall it should work with pfSense.Steve
-
nope i couldnt get it work using windows 7 so i went to a xp pc and wrote the files to the card, put th card back in and tried to use putty and nothing shows up!!
-
Well one of two things is happening here, assuming the firebox is working correctly:
1. The image is not writing to the card correctly.
2. Your serial cable setup is not working.
If the image doesn't write properly then physdiskwrite will show errors. Possibly the image was corrupted during download. Did you check the md5?
Have you proved your serial cable setup with something else? What do you mean by 'keyspan'?Steve
-
So i dont know what going on
-
I'm sure we can get this working, many other users have. :)
However in order to troubleshoot the problem you need to answer my questions as best you can.
If I'm asking you something you don't understand then please ask me to clarify it.Did you check the MD5 sum of the downloaded image file against the one provided?
Have you tested your serial cable setup successfully with any OS?
Steve

A keyspan is just a serial to usb adapter. And yes i i can use the same serial cable on a cisco device
-
Ah OK,
Next thing then is to check that your serial connection on the firebox is working.
Boot the firebox either to m0n0wall (if you are sure that is working) or with the original Watchguard OS. Both should provide output on the serial port, m0n0wall at 9600 and the Watchguard OS at 115200.
If you can see some output from either of those then the pfSense card is not booting for some reason.Steve
