I have a APC Smart UPS 1500 connect to pfSense with the configuration being:
    Local USB to USB
    Driver: usbhid

This should work according to the NUT hardware compatibility list.

However I get "Poll UPS [APC-Smart-UPS-1500] failed - Driver not connected" in pfSense system logs.

    When I run "/usr/local/etc/rc.d/nut.sh start" I get:
    starting NUT
    Network UPS Tools upsmon 2.7.4
    kill: No such process
UPS: APC-Smart-UPS-1500 (master) (power value 1)
Using power down flag file /etc/killpower
Network UPS Tools - UPS driver controller 2.7.4
Network UPS Tools - Generic HID driver 0.41 (2.7.4)
    USB communication driver 0.33
    No matching HID UPS found
Driver failed to start (exit status=1)

This is despite the UPS appearing fine if I run "dmesg | grep -i USB":
    ugen0.2: <American Power Conversion Smart-UPS 1500 RM FW617.3.I USB FW8.1> at us bus0
    ugen0.2: <American Power Conversion Smart-UPS 1500 RM FW617.3.I USB FW8.1> at us bus0 (disconnected)
    ugen0.2: <American Power Conversion Smart-UPS 1500 RM FW617.3.I USB FW8.1> at us bus0
    ugen0.2: <American Power Conversion Smart-UPS 1500 RM FW617.3.I USB FW8.1> at us bus0 (disconnected)
    ugen3.2: <American Power Conversion Smart-UPS 1500 RM FW617.3.I USB FW8.1> at us bus3
(could it be because it appears to be connected to both bus0 and bus3?)

    I have tried:
    different usb port
    saving the configuration again.
    set various extra arguments.
    restarting pfsense

    What else could I try?

After a few USB re-plugs and restarts of pfSense it finally figure it out and started working.
