bufferbloat / limiter = hair pulling
-
Hey all,
Devices:
arris docsis 3.1
Netgate SG-3100 latest version 21.02i went from 500 to 1Gig network and everything was working fine with the traffic limiters i had setup.
Recently my wife was complaining that when im on a teams call and she has hers it sounds bad and has issues. I checked dslreports/speedtest bufferbloat on the upload upward 2000's.
The guide i followed was lawrence systems but did change the queue length as it worked better in 5k.
My down limiter is set to 950Mbit with 5000 queue length.
up limiter was set to 50Mbit with 5000 queue length.I was playing around with the setting and the only way i can get my rating from F to A is to change the up limiter to 22Mbits....
Is that odd ? or am i missing something that i have to limit from 50 to 22 for my upload speeds .
Thanks

@tryk
If you are having connection trouble with only 2 teams sessions that require you to resort to traffic shaping, then your ISP connection is horrible.Might be better to get the problem fixed instead of trying to work around it
-
@heper well teams was the initial issue but i noticed other random network problems like during gaming. the bufferbloat is insane but ill have to test that out tomorrow again.
somehow i doubt its the ISP since my download speed are fine, when i run dsl reports speed test i get latency notifications on the dashboard
also on a side note they just fixed some piece of equipment due to issues.
replaced the whole coax to some monstrous cable -

@steveits i did setup traffic shaping using Codel .
Its on my initial post.I started having bad bufferbloat months ago and adjusted that and am using a floating rule.
now the bufferbloat started back up presumably after upgrading from 500 to gig speeds. -
well this is interesting. I reset all of my equipment and now everything is better.
glitch?

Its on my initial post.I have been known to read over things but I don't see "shaping" or "codel" in the post, just "limiters"...? At any rate, glad you got it sorted out. When in doubt restart. :)

bonus round = ive been online after the reboot with no issue but my dashboard is wonky now
shows 100% packet loss and offline ... uhm im online so im confused
-
So it seems that even with limiters.
when i go on VPN on another machine bufferbloat goes up to D ratingwhen my wife also goes on vpn thats when we hit the 2000's for bufferbloat.
this is really annoying.
-
@tryk so after around 24h's you start mentioning that a vpn is involved?
-
@heper I was just told this morning that my wife was using vpn as this was not the case before.
something new so im on vpn and apparently she just started to use VPN. -

So vpn inside another vpn? Yeah not very useful if what your after is performance ;)
If your adamant about wanting to use vpn on your network - prob good idea to policy route at least her connection to not use your default vpn.. When she is connecting to hers
-
@johnpoz hmm maybe i wasnt clear or not understanding.
pfsense doesnt use any vpn.My work laptop has vpn and now my wifes work laptop uses vpn.
-
Ah ok - I misunderstood your statement then..
-
@johnpoz its ok i wrote it kinda wonky .
so im at the point where i have no clue whats going on.
After the last 2 reboots now my thermal sensors dont populate at all and sits on updating.I feel like maybe this box needs a full rebuild.
Just odd that when i have 2 seperate vpns running i then get crazy bufferbloat and the network turns sluggish. turn 1 vpn off then its better .

I don't have a source, sorry, but I'm pretty sure I've seen other posts about that and I want to say there is a fix that can be applied. Alternately 2.5.1 should be out shortly (days to weeks, sounds like).

im wondering if after i upgraded to 2.5.0 things started happening . i cant confirm .
ill keep looking , thanks for the info all
