Problems getting OPT interface up for wifi
-
hey guys,
Weird problems with my pfsense box. Im trying to get my OPT interface up and running and im having all kinds of stability issues in the proccess. I had wifi running on this same very machine, and same wireless card. All used to work perfect since i replaced a new harddrive in my pfsense box. now whenever i configure the opt wifi interface, then enable it, the system freezes and then reboots. Once the machine reboots, it goes through boot stage and once it goes through configuring lan/wan etc, it gets to configuring opt interface, and the machine keeps rebooting. I gotta pull the wireless card out, then delete the interface so the machine will actually work as it should. i really would like to get my wifi up, could someone please advise?
thank you so much!

Don't want to hijack your thread, mine does almost the same thing. As soon as I enable the OPT(wireless) this system outputs some kernel error (was pressed for time this morning, couldn't get it down) and tells me it has to reboot. Then it keeps doing it. Haven't had much time to test as I had to sleep. I JUST got the box working last night and tried for wireless with no go.
If you find a solution, please share ;D
Is your card compatible? I'm pretty sure mines not, looks like some cheap generic one. I wanna say it's a Edimax/Encore. I forgot, will have to look when I get home. I'll post if I get a fix.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. Sorry im just now getting back to this thread, but I reallly want to get this working.
Im using pfSense 1.2.3-RC1 and the wireless card I bought about 6 months ago after struggling to find the card that will work with pfSense, is the same wireless card I have always used and has always worked is installed….. The only change, was a new HDD and install of pfSense, thats when the wifi started giving me problems. This is what I do not understand :(
This wifi card is compatible 100% and works perfectly with pfSense as it always has. If someone knows the answer please advise :(
Thanks

What wireless card are you using? What chipset is on the card? Some users have reported problems with snapshot builds of pfSense 1.2.3 and Ralink based cards. May only Wifi experience on pfSense is with an Atheros based card which has worked well for at least 15 months.
When you did a new pfSense install with the new HDD you may have changed the pfSense version

Hey buddy, I believed you key problem is not your HDD, it's you're new install of PFsense and compatibility of your Wireless card. If you used a different version of Pfsense and same card then that youre root cause.
What card are you using? Linksys, Netgear, DLink?
If Linksys (Ralink) then that's your're problem. These chipset are notorious with Pfsense. I used to have a linksys and connection drop, failed connection, and random issue always happened until I replaced the card with a Dlink using the proven atheros chip.
Try replacing the card with one with Atheros chip is you have one on hand to check it out.
Half the learning is from reading, the other half is from experimenting.

Its an atheros chipset man, thanks for the reply. The card is a Linksys, I would give you more detail on the card, but its the same card ive used for my pfsense firewall since day one, even the current version im using now :P Its always worked, no changes to version, just a new hdd, thats all.
