SG-5100 takes over 20 minutes to boot after eMMC failure
-
The new install-to-BE feature seems like it will at least help speed up updates, in that the install is complete before the boot:

So My SG4860 is starting to get a bit long in the tooth.. These emmc failures, get me thinking I should prob move to ssd on my 4860 before an actual emmc failure.
I was never able to figure out how get a reading of the current life or use of the emmc on the 4860..
Looking at the instructions on how to add for the 4860..
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-4860/msata-installation.html
I don't seem to see any specifics for what would be a good model to use.. Other than what they show in the pictures.
I take it this would work
https://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Information-Internal-Drives-TS128GMSA230S/dp/B07GMD5R7M?th=1
Should prob order now, and then when 24.03 comes out would be a good time to make the switch over to it. Since it would be planned down time for me anyway.. And really shouldn't take that much longer to take it down install the ssd and install and restore backup.
-
Yup that should work.
The eMMC on the 4860 doesn't support the tools to read the stat data unfortunately. I think because it's USB connected.
-
@stephenw10 yeah I think usb connected rings a bell..
Ordering that now, and can switch over when 24.03 comes out..
-
@johnpoz It is:-
I have the ADI PDF if you want a copy?
-
Not the ADI variant, but the Silicom version can be found here.
-
I would expect them to be identical.
-
The ssd should be here in a couple of days.. If I get ambitious, maybe move to it sooner.. But prob just wait til 24.03 comes out - which hopefully will be on schedule and not that far away ;)
-
-
@stephenw10 hahaha - yeah maybe I should knock on some wood when I put that out into the universe, hahahah
-
@johnpoz Have you opened up your 4680 yet ?
The reseller in the UK opened up mine to put in the drive, when I opened it up to pop in a wireless card, one of the screws spins round in the case as its steel screw mating to an aluminium thread.
Bit of a design fault IMO.
-
Hmm, not seen that myself. But those are small screws in to Alu as you say. Easy to over-torque if you're not careful or using the wrong tool.
-
@NogBadTheBad Nope never even thought about opening it ;)
But this emmc failures got me thinking can't hurt to move to ssd, I don't currently have any plans of updating my 4860.. But for a few bucks and extra few minutes during what is normal down time anyway - if that "could maybe" give me a couple extra years before I have to pull the trigger on something new.. Well worth it I say.
I am still on the look out for my unicorn switch, since my sg300 is getting a bit long in the tooth as well.
Something that is multigig, like 24 some ports, fanless - very low power consumption, but also have a few poe ports to get rid of my injectors for my APs... For like couple hundred I would be all over it.. But seems like I am hunting unicorns with those wish list items - heheh
-
Yeah let me know if you find that switch.
-
@stephenw10 yeah... I think asking a bit much, especially at that price point, but I prob pull the trigger even that 400 something mark if it had all those features..
A few combo ports where I could put in sfp+ would be nice too since I am dreaming ;)

If you're already invested in the UniFi ecosystem, their switches are great. I got one of these switches awhile back and it rocks!

heir switches are great.
That wouldn't be my opinion to be honest.. I have had no issues with their APs.. But their switches not so much..
Do they have such a unicorn switch - I keep up with their product line.. And everyone of their switches feature sets and operation has been underwhelming to be honest.. And a high price point..

Yeah let me know if you find that switch.
And me.

johnpoz is going for a Transcend TS128GMSA230S. I bought two Transcend TS240GMTS420S they seem to work fine, but for my others SG-5100 I wanted to choose the TS128GMTS430S (ECC enabled I belive) is there a "better" choice when choosing a SSD for the SG-5100?

TS128GMTS430S
That should work fine. I'm not sure how you might define 'better'. You could probably find an SLC drive with better write endurance etc. But it would be waaay more expensive!
