@johnpoz Have you opened up your 4680 yet ?
The reseller in the UK opened up mine to put in the drive, when I opened it up to pop in a wireless card, one of the screws spins round in the case as its steel screw mating to an aluminium thread.
Bit of a design fault IMO.

Hmm, not seen that myself. But those are small screws in to Alu as you say. Easy to over-torque if you're not careful or using the wrong tool.

@NogBadTheBad Nope never even thought about opening it ;)
But this emmc failures got me thinking can't hurt to move to ssd, I don't currently have any plans of updating my 4860.. But for a few bucks and extra few minutes during what is normal down time anyway - if that "could maybe" give me a couple extra years before I have to pull the trigger on something new.. Well worth it I say.
I am still on the look out for my unicorn switch, since my sg300 is getting a bit long in the tooth as well.
Something that is multigig, like 24 some ports, fanless - very low power consumption, but also have a few poe ports to get rid of my injectors for my APs... For like couple hundred I would be all over it.. But seems like I am hunting unicorns with those wish list items - heheh

@stephenw10 yeah... I think asking a bit much, especially at that price point, but I prob pull the trigger even that 400 something mark if it had all those features..
A few combo ports where I could put in sfp+ would be nice too since I am dreaming ;)

If you're already invested in the UniFi ecosystem, their switches are great. I got one of these switches awhile back and it rocks!

That wouldn't be my opinion to be honest.. I have had no issues with their APs.. But their switches not so much..
Do they have such a unicorn switch - I keep up with their product line.. And everyone of their switches feature sets and operation has been underwhelming to be honest.. And a high price point..

johnpoz is going for a Transcend TS128GMSA230S. I bought two Transcend TS240GMTS420S they seem to work fine, but for my others SG-5100 I wanted to choose the TS128GMTS430S (ECC enabled I belive) is there a "better" choice when choosing a SSD for the SG-5100?

That should work fine. I'm not sure how you might define 'better'. You could probably find an SLC drive with better write endurance etc. But it would be waaay more expensive!

After reading through this thread, my question is about a recommendation for an SSD for the new 4200. Also, I'm assuming that the mmc-utils mentioned https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/troubleshooting/disk-lifetime.html#emmc will work on the 4200?

I have been using the Transcend MLC drives (MSA370, MTS400S) in builds. Their endurance specs (DWPD, TBW) seem to be much better than the 3D NAND drives.

It does not, at least currently, because it's also USB connected in the 4200.

Perhaps I should have started a new thread specific to the 4200... But since I didn't: looking for some guidance on the particulars to look for for an SSD for the 4200. The online documentation I've found thus far is thin. Netgate's 4200 web specs say "1x M.2 (M-key slot) x4 PCIe 4.0", Silicom's specs say "NVMe M.2 SSD"
Which form factor (for example, 2242 or 2280??) for the 4200?
Which interface is better for the 4200? I note that the Transcend devices mentioned are SATA III, but the thread is about the SG-5100.
Which version of NVMe?Thoughts & opinions about different types of NAND are certainly welcome, but as I'm not well versed in these issues, pardon what may seem like basic questions.
I have a pair of 4200s on order and would like to get the correct SSDs so that I can install them once they arrive.

They are 2280 without any sort of adapter hardware. There is one M-keyed slot and one B-keyed slot. Dual keyed drives will therefore give you most flexibility.

Thank you @stephenw10, what about the interface specs (SATA III, PCIe, NVMe) or is this something that doesn't really matter given the 4200 hardware throughput capabilities and application? So for example, the Transcend SATA III M.2 SSDs vs. their PCIe M.2 SSDs?

i did not run with the same luck, i pulled out the emmc, but didnt work again... remain dead, the com port and the leds appear to be fine, but wont boot -
Add me to the list of successful chip-pullers. SG-5100 would not boot at all, no boot menu. I pried the eMMC chip off the board and it boots right up now.
Installed a M.2 drive while I was in there, just installed pfSense to it and restored my config. This thing is hopefully back in service for a bunch more years.
