WAN periodically Rebooting

You can almost certainly use the cable you already have that you were connecting to the filter.
You can connect an RJ11/RJ12 plug into an RJ45 socket, it just uses the central 4 pins.

@stephenw10 Update:- Checked speed on Sunday 22nd Sept,.. and surprisingly my upload and download speeds had gone back up to 71/10Mbps... I assume this is due to BTs learning what the max speed possible is on a line,..
As of approx. 1hr ago I installed the new BT MK4 filter, with my new lead ( using some CAT5e cable approx. 2m ),.. I essentially followed the guidance on this
YouTube video,.. yes he will sell a lead to you,.. but it is useful for which pins to use,.. and how best to wire RJ45 to RJ12...
I did put a squirt of WD40 on the connection pins,.. as they may get damp in the loft,.. and to my way of thinking it keeps the contacts from corroding...
TAFNF.. we will see how long connectivity stays up... -
@diyhouse My Mate Vince, use to have a eBay shop but then doesn't do that much these days, I just terminate the Ethernet cable with RJ45 to RJ12 myself. I make them for folk too but not made any since as been a tad busy.
10Mbps up that's a bit slow, My DSL connection with BT Business & Zen Business I get 20mbps up. This also depends how far you are away from the Cab too.

@VioletDragon Yes,.. I was a little disappointed in my upload speed...
Considering I am only about 200Meters from the cabinet,.. and then only a 100meters from the actual exchange... ( yes the exchange is actually closer.. Literately just across the road, and some yards down :-) )
My plan was to see how this config goes,.. before re-applying the Dratek Modem,.. and being able to see 'whats inside the modem performance ' -
@diyhouse Do you see the same speeds with the old VDSL BT Modem as well as the Dreytek ? how are you plugging the modem and Dreytek into the firewall ? Port on switch in a VLAN or straight into the WAN Port of the Firewall ?
-
@VioletDragon said in WAN periodically Rebooting:
the same speeds with the old VDSL BT Modem as well as the Dreytek ?
from what I remember,.. many moons ago,.. the old Modem used to give these speeds,. albeit in the 62/15Mbps ball park.
The Draytek,.. has only managed to deliver 25/9Mpbs with many breaks in connection...
I did think about changing filter and modem together,.. but that does not really help when trying to identify a single cause if something goes wrong...
how are you plugging the modem and Dreytek into the firewall ?
This is done via a good quality, ( or at least it is supposed to be ),.. short CAT6e ethernet cable into the 1st port on the pfsense PC,.. ( the firewall PC has 4 ethernet ports,. one for WAN modem connection, another to local network,.. another to some VLANs, and the other port is unsued ), but never assume I always say,.. I will at some point try another cable.. to eliminate that unknown
-
10M seems suspiciously like one of the available paid rates. Is it linked at that speed or just tested at that?
-
@diyhouse interesting. Did you test the Dreytek on its own without pfsense? When you do a Speedtest do you see any loss on gateway?
Seem a bit strange though. Which package are you on with BT?
Regards.
-
Yeah I thought there was only 80/20 or 40/10 on VDSL but maybe other providers offer different rates.
-
@stephenw10 I’m on Fibre 76 Essential. 76 down and 19 up. But I see around 20 up. With Zen Business Fibre Essentials 70 down 18 up I spend a little more as I have extra IPs.
FTTP needs to come soon though if I’m honest.
-
@stephenw10 HUmm,.. I think I suppossed to get 72/?? where the something is,..
checked contract:-
so I am definitely on the low side
-
@diyhouse I would investigate that. I would look to see if you are getting any loss on your WAN. Contact BT.
Regards
-
@VioletDragon
Lot going on at home so not much free time ATM.
But Just to keep the post alive,.. My download speed is currently sitting around 70Mbps,.. whilst my upload has not really improved from around 10Mbps,.. which is well below spec. I appreciate.
Uptimes are still in the 6 or 7 days max, sometimes 2 or 3... so def. not so good
Will give Draytek a go,.. and see what that can offer.. -
@diyhouse You could possibly have a Line problem, I would highly recommend looking into it when you get some spare time. With the BT Fibre Modems I have with BT and Zen Business I get around 130 days uptime on WAN1 & WAN2 before the connection gets reset.
Regards
-
Mmm, neither of my lines get reset by the server side unless they have some maintenance issue. I usually reboot it before they do!
-
@stephenw10 Are you with BT or Zen ?
-
BT and Plusnet(who are BT, kinda).
-
@stephenw10 Interesting, not sure why the connection is reset after 130 days though. Will keep an eye on it though.
-
Currently at 153days on the Plusnet link and that's just the ppp session in pfSense. The actual DSL link has probably been up longer.

@stephenw10
Hi Guys,.. well plugged the New Draytek 166 modem in,.. config'd MTU to 1490,.. did a firmware upgrade to 4.2.7_BT
Modem connected,.. with some great speeds,.. 70/70,.. amazing,.. on repeat only got 70/10,..
Modem reporting Max download as circa 76,.. and Up,.. at 20,.... but speed test does not achieve the predicted UP speed,.. only 10'ish...
....and the other problem,.. connection only stays up for 10mins or so,...
so had to revert back to Openreach modem...
