WAN periodically Rebooting
-
Mmm, neither of my lines get reset by the server side unless they have some maintenance issue. I usually reboot it before they do!
-
@stephenw10 Are you with BT or Zen ?
-
BT and Plusnet(who are BT, kinda).
-
@stephenw10 Interesting, not sure why the connection is reset after 130 days though. Will keep an eye on it though.
-
Currently at 153days on the Plusnet link and that's just the ppp session in pfSense. The actual DSL link has probably been up longer.

Hi Guys,.. well plugged the New Draytek 166 modem in,.. config'd MTU to 1490,.. did a firmware upgrade to 4.2.7_BT
Modem connected,.. with some great speeds,.. 70/70,.. amazing,.. on repeat only got 70/10,..
Modem reporting Max download as circa 76,.. and Up,.. at 20,.... but speed test does not achieve the predicted UP speed,.. only 10'ish...
....and the other problem,.. connection only stays up for 10mins or so,...
so had to revert back to Openreach modem... -
Hmm, really starts to seem like it must be a line issue.
Though 70/70 seems like it might have been a measurement glitch because there is no sync speed for VDSL that would achieve that AFAIK.

@stephenw10
BT engineer call booked..!
Interesting went through the hoops of logging an engineer call,.. and BT self tests,.. it confirmed there was a line problem.
Although it is somewhat confusing when they refer to status lights of the BT HomeHub for indication as to what is not working,.. in the following questions,..
But hey ho,.. engineer scheduled for next week,.. ( my choice, I was offered tomorrow,.. But cannot do that ). So pretty good service I would say. -
@diyhouse I thought as much. Be interesting to see what the outcome.

Well guys..the man from BT he came he saw, he played,..he did not fix!!He checked the line for errors etc,.. and found it to be we within spec. with zero errors. he checked things up stream,.. and found no issues... Everything to him looked and tested out fine, even did a reset of the upstream connection, but to no avail.
Discussed why New Openreach Modem stayed connected for 10days ( but still below 100days ) or so, but Draytek was lucky to stay up for more than 5 minutes,.. even though it does show in DSL status, Actual speeds as 78/20Mbps,..and Attainable as 78/26Mbps...
So as far as Openreach man can do,.. connection to my property is good,.. the problem is essentially my side.. but has no idea why Draytek keeps reconnecting,.. as he sees them all the time...
Any thoughts guys,..

Earlier Draytek modems had several different firmware versions for different line conditions. I don't known if that's still true for the V166 but if it is you could try a different one.
-
@stephenw10
Hi Stephen,..I did upgrade the Draytek to the lastest firmware available,..
Maybe worth raising a support call with Draytek? -
Yup may as well. They may have alternative firmware you could try.

https://www.draytek.co.uk/forum/dsl-specific-questions/24943-draytek-166?start=6Just found this on the Draytek site....
-
Hmm, well that would be painful.
Might need a TLDR post here as I can't recall excatly what you've tested at this point! You still saw disconnects with the Openreach modem(s) though?
-
@stephenw10
Yes,.. was thinking this post was getting a little like war a peace,.. with nearly 160 posts...
Draytek log support opened,.. their sending me some tests to do... -
@diyhouse Interesting, Can you attach a screenshot of the WAN interface ? What are your MTU/MSS settings for WAN ?
-
@VioletDragon
Sorry,. missed you post,.. ( lot going on this end )
Currently Draytek are looking at my logs of how / when the link closes etc,.. as they have said everything looks good to them... well at least from the screen shots.
MTU is set to 1492
-
Can you make the Draytek do the PPPoE connection and see if it still drops?
-
@stephenw10 Yes,.. was wondering to do that,.. as at the end of the day,.. one critical part of the puzzle we have not eliminated is the pfsense box itself,.. maybe h/w or config issues,.. unlikely but not impossible..
I think I have re config'd the Draytek to handle to PPPoE,.. and I think I can just connect the modem to one of the spare ports on the pfsense box,.. and add rules to just route all ( ipv6/4) traffic from a 192.168.3.0 network to 192.168.30.0 network...
This should then preserve all my 192.168.3.0 DNS mapping etc,.. and should be transparent to my overall network,..
Are my thoughts assumptions correct? Tx for any guidelines...
