      I'm running CE version 2.8.1 and just got one of these messages. Here are some observations:

      Here's the message:

      "check_upgrade: "Updating repositories metadata" returned error code 1 @ 2025-11-21 02:17:59"

      When I go to this page...

      ...I see this:

        So? An update to the release notes documentation page doesn't mean anything. Also others have other timestamps as they were checking their systems at other times.
        In addition I have the same problem running plus where the 25.11 docs page is up for days/weeks. Nothing to see there.

        Hmm, I hit this on one test VM but after rebooting it was able to connect fine so I was never able to troubleshoot further. Are you able to reboot that as a test?

        That's a nope. For the reboot-fixing-stuff. Just rebootet the device - came up again, still does have the errors popping up.

            @JeGr These were my observations. For all I know, the change that triggered the error code could be related to something else occurring in another repository at the same time. Or, it could be a clue to a common mode fault. Do you know how often pfSense polls updates?

              It checks for available upgrades every 24hrs or whenever you open the dashboard if you have the system info widget on there.

              But it will try to update the pkg db any time you do a pkg operation.

                I might've been checking Package Manager or Patches at the time. And, yes, I have a System Info widget.

                  The error got triggered way more then that. I have logs where it essentially spammed the syslog while noone was logged in so no dashboard etc.

                  Also on another note: the "failed" PKG that is now a way higher version and can't be run essentially blocks the LLDPD package from running as it throws the same elf-ld.so errors around. So if someone could please fix that new pkg package being pushed downwards to 25.07 when NOT trying to update, that would be great, as it essentially fucks up a few packets that won't work anymore :/

                  I have to manually run pkg-static install -f pkg and forcefully downgrade it to 1.21.3_5 again so my services come up again.

                  when the next push happens and pkg happens to happily update to an incompatible version again, those will all go down the again. I don't think it's helpful to have pkg always update to a new version when not even trying to upgrade (e.g. to the RC) especially when other packages have dependencies to the same libraries as pkg does. So given for example for said LLDPd.

                  edit: just as an example from yesterday night's log just before the rotation. logged in around 11:30pm so waaay later then the logs show. So that error - when it happenes - is not only triggered every 24h or when pkg ops run - something triggers it often and hard.

                    Hmm, that's unexpected. pkg is the only think that would ever update itself. The non-static version then fails because the libs are not updated.

                    Do you have the output error shown by lldpd?

                            OK that seems fine. You might try: pkg-static -d update

                            But I would expect pfSense-upgrade to throw an error if that does.

                                  It's likely the same as pkg itself, an elf error because of ld.so mismatch due to wrong version of a library. I think it was either libc.so.7 or libssl.so.30 or one among those lines. It'd surely be easy to reproduce when you have a 25.07 VM and manually upgrade pkg to 2.x.x instead of 1.12.5.

                                    But those libs are not updated when pkg gets upgraded. That;s why the new pkg fails to run unless it's run with statically linked libs. So I wouldn't expect anything else to be affected unless that was also upgraded. But, yes, let me confirm....

                                        I did that 5min ago, so it does indeed hang on libutil or some other it seems ;)

                                        Anyway it's one of the dependency libs that PKG and LLDPd share that seems to be borked whenever pkg is "over-updating" itself. ldd shows a LOT they have in common. I forgot to make a ldd-run before and after, that should have shown some light into it.

                                          Ok I can see how this would break it but, for some reason, I'm now failing to replicate it. Digging....
