Well that really depends on what features you need, and whether you're comparing a Cisco router or ASA. If you need a captive portal solution, Cisco won't work for you and pfSense will. If you need multi-WAN, you're out of luck with an ASA, but pfSense or a Cisco router will suit you fine. If you need Websense integration, only Cisco will work (though there are alternative content filtering solutions that will work with pfSense). If you need to NAT VPN traffic, Cisco will work and pfSense won't (though I'd never recommend NATing VPN traffic, if you have to connect two networks using the same IP address space you have to use NAT). Those are just a few examples. There are about a million different things you can do with pfSense and Cisco devices, some that pfSense can do and Cisco can't, some vice versa, and the vast majority that either can accommodate equally well. In most networks your only differentiator is going to be cost. On some networks only one or the other will be able to accommodate what you need, and there are just as many situations on each side. There are far too many variables and differences between networks and capabilities of the two to give you a definitive list.

I love the replies!  ;) It looks like Freebsd does not use that field so its more than likely a lost cause.  Does anyone know if Freebsd/pfsense just monitors traffic through SNMP only?

@les_garten: Is it possible that the MAC/IP you were using were under attack?  With the DLINK, you are using a different MAC and possibly a different IP. Les I think its more of a security feature this ISP has. Also, I believe that at the end of the night it re registers the current mac, then leases the line. I cloned the mac of the router after I remembered you must register, but it was too late, I was already locked out. When I woke up i had an ip and it was working. I am about to abandon this project because I am pretty sure I cant do what I want. Thanks to all that helped me try Im out

The question outstanding here is: is this a known bug? Should I submit a bug report?

Nothing special is needed for that kind of setup, you use one of the public ip-addresses for the WAN-interface and that address will be the address everything coming from LAN is natted to by default. For other addresses you setup 1:1 nat with virtual IP.

Use squid…you can allow unfiltered access by IP.  Read/search the packages forum.

You should pay more attention to what you read. @http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic: System: Advanced: If you want to be able to use NAT-mappings from withing your own LAN disable the checkbox "Disable NAT Reflection"

Thanks very much for the help, I've got it up and running at this point.  I've got some more questions, but I'll post them under the sub forums where they should go.  Thanks again!

Easiest program I know of to literally map a drive letter is called webdrive. Which can map a drive to FTP or SFTP (FTP over SSH) site. However the program is not free but does have a full evaluation version you can take a look at it at: http://www.webdrive.com/ One other choice I'm aware of is: http://www.sftpdrive.com/ If you don't need drive mapping and you are using Firefox there is an add on called FireFTP which is a great program that supports FTP and SFTP.
