    from the Connecting to the serial console The default serial console settings in pfSense 2.2 and later are 115200/8/N/1, meaning: Speed: 115200 Data Bits: 8 Parity Bits: None Stop Bits: 1 Must be set into the Putty or TerraTerm or any other terminal program too! In pfSense is it the default setting.

    I read through that a couple of times, and my understanding is that, while it does not prioritize VoIP traffic, fq_codel manages the queue more efficiently, so that the small VoIP packets are worked into available spaces, which means they're not waiting in the queue for other 'stuff' to finish. That's way over simplified, but is it an accurate way to describe it? @belt9: for VoIP, I would strongly recommend you read the linked thread in its entirety, then ask whatever questions you may have either here or in the traffic shaping forum. - playing with fq_codel in 2.4 In short, VoIP traffic suffers badly from high latency as I'm sure you know. pfSense just implemented (as a result on upstream FreeBSD developments) fq_codel. Why do you care? Because fq_codel is very easy to implement over your entire network, it does not require much tuning (usually none at all) and it will do an exceptional job of giving traffic such as VoIP very low latency connections even when your WAN is maxed out. It's currently a CLI-only implementation, but very easy to do (done in <5 minutes).

    For an AM3+ system? I'm not really aware of too many boards with onboard graphics, but tossing away one of the x16 slots on my ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 that I'm using for a FreeNAS build (I already had it and it supports ECC) doesn't hurt so much, especially since I had an extra Quadro 600 card lying around that doesn't consume the slot immediately adjacent to it like many GPUs do.  My board has 4 x16 (physically) slots; 2 of them actually have 16 lanes and the other 2 have 4 lanes.  I'm using one of the x4 slots for the GPU; that leaves 2 x16 and 1 x4 for other devices.  One slot holds a x4 Intel NIC, one of the x16 slots has an x8 SAS HBA in it, and there's still one free, even with the GPU in there. I used to have that same Asrock board as well, it's a fine board. I ran 3 GPUs on it and it didn't break a sweat. There's no reason NICs in those slots would put any undue strain on it.  If you need to dedicate the multi-lane PCIe slots to NICs, I'd look at picking up an old PCI graphics card.  There's also at least one PCIe x1 GPU out there IIRC.  You don't need a lot of bandwidth for the console on pfSense. And finally, you could also look at consolidating NICs by picking up a server pull quad NIC or two. That way you could have 8 physical ports in just 2 PCIe x4 slots. Hope this helps. EDIT:  Just re-read and realized you have 10Gbps cards in there.  So disregard the last bit.  If you really want a quality AM3+ board the M5A99FX PRO R2.0 is great.  2x16 and 2x4 all in x16 physical configuration.  Plus a x1 and a legacy PCI slot for good measure.  Enough for your 10Gbps cards and a GPU.

    Hi! @pldelisle: Or maybe I could only add an Intel Quad port i350 board to my actual « server » for 80$ CAD on eBay? I know these are made in China… are these boards as good as the genuine ones? I saw this one Some people say that they are, most I believe say that they are not and that the parts and design are of lesser quality. The card you posted is definitely meant to deceive… While the main chip is quite likely a real Intel chip (because Intel sells them to third parties), the Delta chips are clearly fake. Delta is supposed to be embossed, not printed like it is on the one you posted. What I would try to get if I were you would be an HP, IBM or other OEM version of an I340 or I350, preferably new and hopefully from a Canadian (which I assume you are since you used an ebay.ca link) or US seller. If the card is a real one it should look nearly identical to a real Intel card with some possible substitutions. I have both a know real Intel I340-T4 bought full price and from a known legit place and its HP version bought off eBay… They essentially look the same with some subtle differences. The Delta chips on both are embossed which is a good sign. A thread on servethehome (https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/comparison-intel-i350-t4-genuine-vs-fake.6917/) suggested some of the differences between my cards  were a sign of a counterfeit card but I do not fully agree with they said. They were of course comparing I350s together and I am comparing I340s but I don't believe it makes much difference. The clock crystal is different. The known real Intel has a TXC like servethehome said a real Intel card has but my HP version has a branded clock crystal from a known Intel supplier. I believe what is important here is to have a branded clock crystal (not a no name like the counterfeit cards) preferably from a known Intel supplier. The inductors are also different between both card but this were things get funny… My known real Intel card has the inductors they say are fake while my HP version of the same card has the ones they say are OK… I don't think you should say that a card is a counterfeit solely because less important components (like the clock crystal and inductors) are different, Intel uses different suppliers for some of those parts so they are bound to be different sometimes. You should however always expect to have real embossed Delta chips and things such as clock crystals should be branded, not no name parts… Good luck and have a nice day! Nick

    @BlueKobold Thanks for your continued responses, lots of help trying to figure things out… This T5610 is just on loan.  I need to get it back soon, so I want to switch back to the E3845 or to virtualize on the C2758.  The real-world performance seems to be pretty similar between the two.  CPU comparison sites also show single core performance seems similar, and the differences really only show up when using multicore apps or AES-NI.  I don't have any tunnels open right now.  I occasionally VPN back in. Not that I want to close that door, it just isn't a priority at the moment.  My other VMs don't have high CPU utilization they are relatively low peaking around 60-85% a couple of times a day for only a couple of minutes. The C2758 is not really much needing to tune and since the version 2.4.x the hassle of turning the TRIM on is gone forever. So what exactly do you mean with a PIA for you? Perhaps I was not really understanding it in the right way. enable PowerD (high adaptive) enable TRIM if SSD or mSATA are in usage shorten the num.queues to 1, 2 or 4 for each NIC high up the mbuf size to 125000, 250000, 500000 or 1000000 if the IPMI port is shared to the WAN port as fall back you might be running increasing or high up the squid default memory size This are things you could do, and not you must do! it would be ideal to get the C2758 running the router in a VM on Proxmox and not spend any more money. I am only using the on-board ports for management.  I have an i350 QP in it for VMs and WAN. Assuming for a minute that I go with a dedicated piece of hardware for pfSense, should I be looking at an i5 at a minimum to be running all of these pfSense packages?

    @sirozha: The auto-update is showing 2.3.3_1 Is this an intermediate image that’s required to update from 2.3.2?I’ve read the release notes and it seems that I should be able to update directly from 2.3.2 to 2.4.0. Why doesn’t the auto-update show 2.4.0? Probably because of the auto-updater settings. You may need the intermediate version from there before you can continue. Direct upgrades are possible, but you often have to supply the direct upgrade image. This can also be done from the interface and also from the SSH console.

    It was meant to be both humorous and serious.  I try to make sure that my logs stay at a fixed size and I disable those that a just naggy.  Most logs are naggy if you ask me.  I do like firewall logs.
