The card you posted is definitely meant to deceive…

While the main chip is quite likely a real Intel chip (because Intel sells them to third parties), the Delta chips are clearly fake. Delta is supposed to be embossed, not printed like it is on the one you posted.

What I would try to get if I were you would be an HP, IBM or other OEM version of an I340 or I350, preferably new and hopefully from a Canadian (which I assume you are since you used an ebay.ca link) or US seller.

If the card is a real one it should look nearly identical to a real Intel card with some possible substitutions.

I have both a know real Intel I340-T4 bought full price and from a known legit place and its HP version bought off eBay…

They essentially look the same with some subtle differences.

The Delta chips on both are embossed which is a good sign.

A thread on servethehome (https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/comparison-intel-i350-t4-genuine-vs-fake.6917/) suggested some of the differences between my cards  were a sign of a counterfeit card but I do not fully agree with they said. They were of course comparing I350s together and I am comparing I340s but I don't believe it makes much difference.

The clock crystal is different. The known real Intel has a TXC like servethehome said a real Intel card has but my HP version has a branded clock crystal from a known Intel supplier. I believe what is important here is to have a branded clock crystal (not a no name like the counterfeit cards) preferably from a known Intel supplier.

The inductors are also different between both card but this were things get funny…

My known real Intel card has the inductors they say are fake while my HP version of the same card has the ones they say are OK…

I don't think you should say that a card is a counterfeit solely because less important components (like the clock crystal and inductors) are different, Intel uses different suppliers for some of those parts so they are bound to be different sometimes. You should however always expect to have real embossed Delta chips and things such as clock crystals should be branded, not no name parts…

This T5610 is just on loan.  I need to get it back soon, so I want to switch back to the E3845 or to virtualize on the C2758.  The real-world performance seems to be pretty similar between the two.  CPU comparison sites also show single core performance seems similar, and the differences really only show up when using multicore apps or AES-NI.  I don't have any tunnels open right now.  I occasionally VPN back in. Not that I want to close that door, it just isn't a priority at the moment.  My other VMs don't have high CPU utilization they are relatively low peaking around 60-85% a couple of times a day for only a couple of minutes.

The C2758 is not really much needing to tune and since the version 2.4.x the hassle of turning the TRIM on
is gone forever. So what exactly do you mean with a PIA for you? Perhaps I was not really understanding it
in the right way.

enable PowerD (high adaptive) enable TRIM if SSD or mSATA are in usage shorten the num.queues to 1, 2 or 4 for each NIC high up the mbuf size to 125000, 250000, 500000 or 1000000 if the IPMI port is shared to the WAN port as fall back you might be running increasing or high up the squid default memory size

Do you know if virtualizing on Proxmox balances the load on other cores? I am on the community repo. I am using the kvm64 CPU.  I thought I read ESXi users see those benefits.

However, I just have a feeling that neither of these CPUs have enough power to run these apps. Assuming for a minute that I go with a dedicated piece of hardware for pfSense, should I be looking at an i5 at a minimum to be running all of these pfSense packages?

Probably because of the auto-updater settings. You may need the intermediate version from there before you can continue. Direct upgrades are possible, but you often have to supply the direct upgrade image. This can also be done from the interface and also from the SSH console.

It was meant to be both humorous and serious.  I try to make sure that my logs stay at a fixed size and I disable those that a just naggy.  Most logs are naggy if you ask me.  I do like firewall logs.

I would probably hand build the cable. It's not particularly high speed or anything I doubt you would have problems as long as the connections are to the right pins.

If buying a powerful router for cheap is the goal then you won't beat eBay (read: used systems from any source).

eBay is full of used end-of-lease workstations without HDD's containing i3-i5's that have AES-NI for <$100.
Buy one of those and install to either a pair of thumb drives or a cheap SSD.
Add an eBay i340-tX and you can have a very powerful system for ~$100.

The only real downside is power usage, but without a HDD it really won't be that much higher, probably ~10W or less delta in most comparisons to systems with comparable performance. Translates to ~$8-18/yr in the CONUS for a 24/7/365 box.

This combo would cost you about $125-150 after tax & shipping depending on where you live (CONUS) and gets you an i5 with a passmark a little better than an i3-7100 for about 15W hotter TDP and it even comes with a HDD & 6GB of RAM. That's a whole system for about the same price as an i3-7100 after tax+shipping.

pfBasic, I just wanted to thank you for turning me on to the idea of buying a used SFF + intel NIC.  I was planning to build a much more expensive low-power box to replace my aging supermicro atom d515 that's been chugging along for years, but it was not nearly up to the task of routing a new 1Gbit/s connection.  I found a dell SFF with about the same specs as the HP you listed for $120 and an i340-t2 for $20.  Easily handles the fast connection and power is relatively low at ~40W idle.  As you said, can't beat the price/perf ratio.

Using the loader usb quirk is generally a better solution since it will be applied whenever the device is detected. So if the modem is re-inserted during runtime for example.

But the value should go in /boot/loader.conf.local to ensure it survives an update. loader.conf may be re-written.

I was able to solve it differently,

Using PfSense 2.4.0 was and changed the file in /conf/config.xml, according to the documentation https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Executing_commands_at_boot_time it is possible to add command when starting the system.
So my file looks like this:

Now everytime I turn off or restart the modem, it is already up properly.
