    This seems very unlikely to be a hardware limitation.
    What are you trying to forward the UDP packets to? What makes you thing it's not working? Any other details that might be relevant.

    because your new network cards are of a different make/model, you can run interface reassignment through serial/vga console.

    No. You can leave it unassigned or just ignore it if the drivers don't recognise it. You can probably disable it in the bios anyway.

    @clifcox:

    Oh, I couldn't find a good Linux equivalent to devinfo. Do you know of another diagnostic that would be helpful here?

    lspci -vv from the root login would probably come close.

    @clifcox:

    You can see from the above, that interrupts 20 - 23 are assigned to the for NICs so that seems to be working correctly.

    Yes, the interrupts assigned are the same on both operating systems. (They should be!)

    Phys reported on dc0 and dc1 different from those reported on Atom motherboard.

    @clifcox:

    Note that while I was trying to get the problem ports to sense carrier and become active I saw these console messages:

    dc0: dc_netcfg_wait failed to force rx to idle state
    dc1: dc_netcfg_wait failed to force rx to idle state

    dc_netcfg_wait() waits for up to 1000 time for status bits to get desired values. The loop includes a DELAY(10) call which should stall for 10 microseconds.  Strange that on an Atom motherboard a 10mS delay doesn't seem long enough but it is long enough on a Dell motherboard. (Or do you see that reported on the Dell motherboard?)

    PERHAPS on the Atom motherboard there is another device with I/O registers at the same addresses as those allocated to dc0 and dc1.
    Does the BIOS on the Atom motherboard have a configuration option for Plug'n'Play OS? If so, what is its current setting? I believe Windows and Linux are plug and play operating systems (they do their own i/o device resource assignment) but FreeBSD is not a plug and play operating system (it relies on BIOS to do i/o device resource assignment). FreeBSD on the Atom board:

    dc0: <intel 10="" 21143="" 100basetx="">port 0x1180-0x11ff mem 0xe0100c00-0xe0100fff irq 21 at device 4.0 on pci6</intel>

    System Rescue CD on the Atom board:

    eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:30:6e:2d:7f:44
              inet6 addr: fe80::230:6eff:fe2d:7f44/64 Scope:Link
              UP BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
              RX packets:3076110 errors:1 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
              TX packets:2784357 errors:7 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:7
              collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
              RX bytes:3644494314 (3.3 GiB)  TX bytes:2186577478 (2.0 GiB)
              Interrupt:21 Base address:0x6c00

    The same nic gets I/O ports 0x1180 to 0x11ff in FreeBSD but an I/O port block at 0x6c00 in Linux. It is some years since I looked at the 2xx4x NICs. I think their device registers can be accessed by EITHER i/o port addresses OR memory addresses but maybe in some cases there is a difference. The dc driver source has a compile time option to access the device registers through i/o ports or memory addresses. I don't know what was chose but the default seems to be to use memory ddresses.

    This looks interesting - but I cannot find any supplier in UK?  Starting from the MSI web site takes you to three MSI resellers - none of whom handle this model.

    Is it still available?  Any second hand market?

    TIA

    @eleanor:

    Hi,

    My bandwidth to the internet is 10Mbps download and 2Mbps upload. But there will be an ESXi connected to the PFSense router which needs 1Gbps, because virtual machines need to talk to each other as fast as possible (because a file system is on NAS).

    But Atom has 1.6GHz processor speed, isn't that enough for what I need? Anyway, can you suggest a product, which is capable of doing what I need in real time: my preference is low power consumption.

    Thank you

    A single core Atom is fine for 10/2 Internet access with Snort. It is NOT fine for analysing 1Gbit/s LAN traffic.  If you want to have snort running internally on your network then you're going to need more power.

    The second drawing you proposed is the "correct" one. Run pfSense at the edge, have an access point hanging off of one port, have your VMs on another port, set them as separate networks and filter the traffic as needed.

    Not really. If the post is old (more than a week?) you can't edit it anyway.

    Jimp,  2.2… Waaahhh! I haven't even started whining "are we there yet" over 2.1 and now I'm waiting on 2.2.   :-)

    ;D Had he same thought… who knows how many drives I'll burn through before 2.2 is out !!!  ;)

    If you pick a drive from the list I gave, none.

    @Kr^PacMan:

    The unit did not boot the original OS. It has no way of telling what it's doing either. Most appliances have a integrated small speaker or a LCD. It could potentially be a DOA, but i have no clue if it works or not.

    Yep, an image with 2 bootable partitions (plus a partition for the config) is written. So you can even go back and forth if an upgrade is troublesome.

    I think they are trying to ask about other people's opinion on the hardware for use with pfsense.

    tbh
    Theres not much to it.
    It has a decent Atom CPU (meh)
    It has realtek 8111E NICs (ugh)
    It comes with 2GB RAM (mmm)
    It has an 8GB SSD with pfsense 2.0.3 preloaded (yay)

    other than that . . . not much to it

    The reason you are getting a memory error is because most Super Micro server motherboards only support ECC RAM. Some do provide support for non ECC but not all of them.

    How many simultaneous clients are you taking into account here? How is the client browsing/downloading history? Any P2P file sharing?

    The reason I am asking this is because 1600 users is a fairly big number no matter what anyone says. 100Mbps WAN might be your bottleneck. Out of 1600 even if a 1000 users connect simultaneously with lets say 1000 connections from each user (browsing, video, chats, mybe p2p… etc), that's 1000000 (1 million) connections. Also you haven't mentioned portal authentication method.

    Honestly, if $$ is not the concern here go for a i5/i7 system (2 of them) with at least 6GB RAM (give room for other packages to breathe just in case) and do a CARP for a fail over in case the primary dies.

    I had similar issues on Dell machines and ended up having to disable PCI slots during install, then re-enable them and pfsense will detect NICs and all is well.

    You shouldn't need any sort of login information on the connection, all that is handled by the router element of the 4620L. It should behave exactly the same as a wireless client connecting to it, it is given a private IP by the dhcp server in the 4620L. Am I missing something here? Does the 4620L have a 'bridge mode' to act more like regular 3g modem?

    Does its have any sort of logging capability that might show the dhcp request from pfSense?
    Edit: I see it does have logging along with most other soho router type features.

    One thing I have experienced using devices that appear as USB Ethernet when connected is that the MAC address of the device is sometimes not read correctly resulting in either no MAC or a randomly generated one, both of which caused trouble. That's the first thing I'd look at.
    In that case the underlying usb driver was cdce(4). What does this appear as?
