    @chrisintaipei:

    anyway, i got a bit worried and checked d2500cc's manual, it specifically says being a fanless board, it requires some kind of case fan or the help of fan from power supplier, and that it should not be totally fanless. so, i'd say it's still better to stick a case fan into the case albeit a very slow one.

    Ok, in summer I have to reevaluate.

    It's not wrong to use a fan. My intention was to reduce power as much as possible. Therefore I decided to go fanless.

    I tried powerd option under pfsense but without impact to the power consumption. So I diabled it again. But you can check if your temperatures feels better with this option enabled.

    Somewhere here in the board you can find how to include mbmon into pfsense to see the temperatures on the status page of the administration webpage.

    It's normal for things to take a while on CF. It has to remount the filesystem read/write, then write out changes, then switch it back. If you have packages installed it can add to that as well.

    The PowerConnect 2848 is strictly a layer 2 switch all routing will be fed up stream and come back down to the switch ports.

    Here is a User Guide for the switch for further reference.

    Traffic between clients on the same subnet does not go through pfSense so it's not possible to block it. You would have to use individual interfaces per client, not really practical even with vlans.

    I don't use bandwidthd so I can't comment. It would be better to start a new thread in the packages sub forum anyway, this thread is now way off topic.  ;)

    Sweet thanks for the feedback guys.

    For testing I was using these cheap kingston SSDs and yeah they died pretty quick.  Reading online they have lots of issues anyways so I just wanted to be sure.  Transcend chips have been very reliable in the past I used the DOM IDE ones with monowall for years.

    Thanks again  :)

    Reading the man pages for the specific driver might give some clues, for example the Intel em driver:

    @mattlach:

    I can't speak for the CPU use for that kind of load, but I will say this.

    Don't plan on using on board ethernet.

    Either get two separate intel PCIe server nic's or one of their dual port models.

    Integrated NIC's - especially Realtek - are terrible for this kind of load.

    For NIC,
    I am glad to say Intel Onboard 82579V + Intel Pro1000 CT w/ 82574L are fine to use in the above case on testing.

    As an update on this issue I could not get this UNSUPPORTED card to work. I replaced with a supported card.

    For anyone wishing to know which NIC's are supported please see follow this link:

    Any idea what will be power consumption in idle mode?

    I built a system like this. However, the 2nd NIC doesn't work on PFSense 2.0.1 yet.
    You will need a case that will allow an intel ct gigabit pci-express card until PFSense 2.1 comes out.
    I have this board with the G20 and it runs at 36 watts.

    The T series intel processors offer very little power savings.
    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i5-2500t-2390t-i3-2100t-pentium-g620t.html

    I just built a pfsense box (well just a motherboard on the floor so far, still waiting for Antec ISK110 VESA case + psu) with S1200KP and G630T and both NIC's are working fine with 2.0.1-RELEASE (amd64).

    @cmb:

    what's their port set to? Sounds like they're both right, you have yours on auto, theirs is forced, and as to be expected with such a misconfiguration, you have a duplex mismatch. Both must match.

    The code I included is what they sent me. I can't tell if that says it's set to 100FD or Auto.

    However, on my standby box, I played around and when set to 100FD, everything worked fine. Should I just go ahead and force that my primary too? I tried to force 1000Mbps to check but the port totally dropped.

    (EDIT)

    I forced both the active and passive to 100FD and it seems as if things are much smoother now. I was having erratic upload speeds when I would run a speedtest.net test, but now things are nearly 100Mbs up and down.

    Thanks as always cmb.

    @MMacD:

    If I want a new fBSD box, I don't have to go through a lot of agony.  I can pretty much buy the parts, assemble them, install the software, turn it on, and there it is.  I'd like to be able to do the same with this firewall-et-al. build.

    The few DIY builders you see running into agony picking hardware would have the exact same issues with stock FreeBSD. Anything that works with stock FreeBSD 8.1 will work with pfsense 2.0.1. The only place you see trouble there is where people pick hardware that wouldn't work with stock FreeBSD.
