Seems like its doing some unknown packet transfer bug on a idle connection.

With FQ_CoDel can I assume you are applying it outbound on WAN?

More likely to have issues doing that but others are seeing this on more regular Limiters/rules.

Kind of odd to see the traffic in the scheduler and not the limiter there....

Maybe because you're using child queues.

          Hummm.

I've stumbled also on a limiter issue since 2.6.0.

Upgraded pfSense @home - using a Hyper-X, using a VM, so my interfaces are called 'hn0' and 'hn1'. It was a "Let's watch some Netflix show while doing this" user experience. It was less intrusive as an iPhone upgrade

I've been using using the "anti bloat limiters" from here : Playing with fq_codel in 2.4 (probably the biggest thread on this forum).

Jimp showed me recently that there is a dedicated pfSense Documentation on this subject now : Configuring CoDel Limiters for Bufferbloat.

On my @work pfSense, using a Dell 'something' I7 core with a quad Intel NIC (em0-em3), as soon as I create the floating firewall rule, all hell breaks loose. Unbound looses upstream connection. Restarting it shows to it tries to connect to the main 13 root servers, but noting gets resolved any more.

Note that I'm using the IPv6 tunnel setup from he.net - so I have a WAN IPv4 interface.
and a "HENET" that is IPv6 only. Is that a multiple WAN setup? I had, before, doubled my Up and down limiters, one set (up and down) for IPv4 and one set (up and won) for IPv6. That worked fine. Bloat testers were happy. I was happy.

As soon as I activate one IPv4 or two (IPv4 and IPv6) of the floating rules, see under Create Floating Rule my pfSense goes in a state that floats between on-line and off-line.

Before, there was a floating firewall rule for the up stream, and one for the down stream. The up stream floating rule had a gateway set.
Before, ECN want not checked, now it is.

I've rebooted in "simple" mode (console option 4) : just one WAN one LAN, no packages, no config.xml import : all is ok. As soon as I add the limiters as per 'official' documentation, that one floating firewall rule : something goes wrong.
Note that a ping "8.8.8.8" still works. But local resolving, for example, is out of business.

My limiters info is the same as what @blikie shows :

          Limiters:
          00001: 22.000 Mbit/s 0 ms burst 0
          q131073 1000 sl. 0 flows (1 buckets) sched 65537 weight 0 lmax 0 pri 0 droptail
sched 65537 type FIFO flags 0x0 0 buckets 0 active
          00002: 2.000 Mbit/s 0 ms burst 0
          q131074 1000 sl. 0 flows (1 buckets) sched 65538 weight 0 lmax 0 pri 0 droptail
sched 65538 type FIFO flags 0x0 0 buckets 0 active
          .....
          Schedulers:
          00001: 22.000 Mbit/s 0 ms burst 0
          q65537 50 sl. 0 flows (1 buckets) sched 1 weight 0 lmax 0 pri 0 droptail
           sched 1 type FQ_CODEL flags 0x0 0 buckets 0 active
           FQ_CODEL target 5ms interval 100ms quantum 1514 limit 10240 flows 1024 ECN
             Children flowsets: 1
          00002: 2.000 Mbit/s 0 ms burst 0
          q65538 50 sl. 0 flows (1 buckets) sched 2 weight 0 lmax 0 pri 0 droptail
           sched 2 type FQ_CODEL flags 0x0 0 buckets 0 active
           FQ_CODEL target 5ms interval 100ms quantum 1514 limit 10240 flows 1024 ECN
             Children flowsets: 2
          ......

I used the proposed "1000" bucket (slots) size, not "50".

          So, what's up :
I can't read simple tutos any more ?
          I need glasses ?
Double WAN issue ? ( I'll try tomorrow without any henet GIF IPv6 tunnel pollution ).
Or worse : the issue is as big as a house, so I can't see it ?

And then this : on a VM with emulated, over complex virtual NIC 'hn' interfaces, it works.
          Bare bone : it's a no go.

          Is this related ? :

          f724b55e-6e28-43b7-b258-e67e745a2680-image.png

@home this option is set, as I'm using hn interfaces.
          Not at the work pfSense.

I add more info when I find it.

@stephenw10 the same config has been working flawless since i started using pfsense2.4.5 nothing changed. Only when u run version 2.6, it breaks the internet access. It seems to be generating unknown packets in filter logs no.10 console.

@gertjan might have something to do with the newer unbound version on 2.6.. just a theory.

I'm following upstream unbound development. pfSense doesn't include the latest version, but 1.13.2 is known to be good.

This : the last two rules are the "limiter rules" for the IPv4 and IPv6 interfaces :

                  The situation :
at home, using pfSense 2.6.0 in a VM, this works.
at work, identical pfSense 2.6.0, same WAN type interfaces, upstream router/ISP - it doesn't.

As far as I know : only NIC drivers are different.

But when u have more than 1 LAN interface active, limiters block internet access

Meaning, if you disable all but one LAN it starts working? (maybe needs a reboot??)

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

Traffic Shaping with fq_codel worked just fine for me after upgrading from 2.4.5-p1 to 2.6.0, even with dual wan, but unbound did not play well, hence I downgraded ...

I am wondering how even 2.6.0 is officially released if two of the basic functions are not working at all!!

I have struggled with the no connection issue, had two sleepless nights for just figuring that out, and rebuilding my system on 2.5.2.

Thank goodness I still have a copy for the 2.5.2 installer image (they have removed it from the download links) quickly as fuck..

When I tested 2.6.0, limiters broke the internet connection, even the captive portal was having issues.

One issue for the captiveportal is that ICMP ping is not allowed for authenticated users !! and there is no setting to change this behavior!

Also, sometimes the captiveportal failed to provide normal internet access after a successful login.

My iPhone still asks me to login to the network, and when I do, I actually get the logout page (because I am actually logged in but the captiveportal still interrupting connections! )

Not even a single workaround to get it working, the only solution was to reinstall 2.5.2

Also, and before reverting to 2.5.2, I tried 2.7.0-DEVELOPMENT, just to try it by the way before reformatting..

                        Same issues!

Seems like 2.5.2 will be the golden release lol.

I am really disappointed, I feel like the release team has no idea about the proper software testing and releasing process.

And it’s more annoying when they remove the old stable release and quickly marking it as “deprecated “ in the update channel selection screen.

If that’s the current readiness status of 2.6.0 and they deprecate 2.5.2, what if it was stable then lol?!!

2.5.2 is still available. So is 2.5.1 if you really wanted it:
                          https://nyifiles.netgate.com/mirror/downloads/

Limiters in general work fine. I've been trying to replicate this issue and so far have failed.

Do you have any data from the captive portal issue? Similar to the reported udp issue, no outbound NAT? https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/12834

Just wanted to chime in on this thread and mention that Limiters/FQ-Codel are working fine for me as floating rules on 2.6.0/22.01 using the instructions from post number 815 in the long FQ-Codel thread:

                            https://forum.netgate.com/topic/112527/playing-with-fq_codel-in-2-4/815

How many of your interfaces have limiters? Above posts imply it's a problem if using limiters on more than one.

For our use the LAN rule allows from a specific IP to any, and:

Before update it was working corectly, now it works only till I didnt run bigger upload/speedtest etc.. Then something happen and I cannnot reach internet anymore. @georgecz58 Can you remove limiters on one of the two interfaces, for testing? Or maybe disable the guest interface?

I see our limiters use different schedulers…

Does no one else have issues with the DNS Resolver in 2.6.0? For me it randomly stopped responding to requests on some network interfaces - presumably those that have been inactive for a while. The only workaround was to manually restart the DNS Resolver. So basically "upgrade success -> no internet connection" for me as well ...
