      Finally out !  :) (devel version)

      Just be sure to do have perl specific version perl-5.10.1_3.

      Mailscanner-dev package uses freebsd 8.2 packages, so do not try it with any other perl version.

      if you have any other perl version, i suggest you to uninstall it, any p5-module and maybe sqlite version prior to 3.7.4 you find with pkg_add.

      After removing it, close console and try to install packages.

        Question marcelloc?

        Do you have to install the mailscanner dev package for the mailscanner function to work in postfix? Or is mailscanner included in the new version you just released?

          Need both.

          Check your perl version before install.

            Been having a quick play and a few problems surfaced.

            Access to /user/spool/MailScanner/incoming generates permission errors unless changed to 0777.

            Even after changing the permissions mailscanner still shows as stoped in Status:services - do a restart no error messages in system log - just will not start the package.

            Can I confirm if there is a particular install sequence?  I did postfix, havp and the mailscanner - all of this is on 2.0 rel x86 running under ESXi 5.0

              I set owner and run user to postfix, it's not happening here. I will try to simulate this on vm.

              As hapv also uses clamav, i would install postfix, then mailscanner, then any other package.

              Run sa-update at console to see if there is no spamassassin dependencies problem.

                  To improve performance on your mailscanner filter, you need to install pfsense with a separated /var partition and enable soft-updates on it during install.

                  The size of this partition depends on your mail volume I suggest at least 10G.

                  without soft-updates it will have a 'not so good performance'.

                  I've tried some rc.d scripts to change / to soft-updates with no luck, so it's better and well supported to do this during install.

                    Well I reinstalled in your suggested sequence but still the mailscanner service is shown as stopped in pfsense - been though log and do not see anything unusual - but perhaps you can.

                      it's running.

                      go to console or ssh and do a ps ax | grep -i mailscanner

                      also check if spamassassin is ok with spamassassin –lint.

                      to update spamassassin rules, run sa-update
                      to update clamav virus definitions, run freshclam

                      As i told you, id did not finished mailscanner process check in status services.

                        Sorry - missed the point about services - mailscanner does seem to be running but no response from other commands.

                            Is there a HOWTO for mailscanner in PFSense? I'm setting up an exchange server behind a PFSense firewall (both virtualized) and would like to use the PFSense VM to filter out some of the garbage before it makes it to the Exchange server. I've used SpamAssassin before, but never MailScanner, and it's been a loooonnnnggg time. :)

                            I had considered running a separate Untangle VM until I saw this in the packages list.

                              The first combat is done in postfix package(more then 80% of spam is killed there).

                              All mailscanner default options are in gui.

                                Thanks. To be a little more clear in my question, what do I need to do from a prerequisit standpoint? Do I need to manually install a new version of perl? Do I need to install the Postfix package first? Or will the mailscanner-dev package do all this for me?

                                    Actually, I do have one further question. As this will be much more processor intensive than just routing traffic, what minimum specs would you recommend? I'm currently running it as a single chip single-core VM with 1G ram on an i7-920.
                                    I'm thinking this will be enough, but was considering upping it to a dual core to be safe.

                                          One final question. What if I have to run perl-5.12.4? I'm running in a VM and VMware Tools requires it. Can I have both installed?

                                            Maybe it will not work, perl modules will be installed on 5.12 and mailscanner will look for it on 5.10.

                                            I'm trying to compile mailscanner latest version 4.83 in a vm with perl 5.12.

                                            If you can, wait some time until I finish these tests. Any mailscanner version change needs a full config check(500 options).

                                            If tests go fine, I'll publish package version 0.2
