i was just wondering is it possible to actually make pfsense make alix to go in standby when no traffic is noticed to save power as well as reduce heat emission?

      No. And also, why?
Is the alix not lowpower enough?
      (we're talking here about 10W)
Letting your light turned on for 4 hours uses up more energy than letting the ALIX run a day….

Huh….you mean that you enter the url and wait 1 minute before even knowing there is connection!!
I do not think that is something for a firewall but you can always run powerd on you box, i do not think its shipped with pfSense though cpufreq(4) is.
