Looks like UFS file system corruption possibly due to reboot or poweroff without a proper shutdown.

A reinstall of pfSense from scratch will usually fix it unless the drive itself has a fault.

It is sometimes possible to do a recovery, but for pfSense which is more of an appliance than a server with valuable data. It is simpler to just reinstall.

Is there an easy way to "extract" the current config before the re-install?

If you don't have a backup of config.xml then you will probably need to try a recovery in order to get it.

On my pfSense the path to config.xml is

              /cf/conf/config.xml

If you can boot up a FreeBSD LiveCD/USB that can mount your original root filesystem on your pfSense hard drive your aim is to copy your config.xml to somewhere else where you can easily retrieve it, This could be a flash drive, SCP to another host, FTP whatever.

@vmb Looks like they already thought of that with the installer.
It has the option to recover the config.xml file.
Recovered the file then just reinstalled.
                All working (mostly).

                Thanks.
