I've been noticing that NTPd crashes periodically and decided to look into it today.  I have the following errors in my sys logs:

Jan 31 13:50:03	kernel: pid 31731 (ntpd), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
    Jan 31 13:50:03	ntpdate[29291]: adjust time server 67.227.252.196 offset 0.012709 sec
    Jan 31 13:49:01	ntpdate[37103]: adjust time server 74.207.219.240 offset -0.021101 sec
Jan 28 02:03:16	kernel: pid 58741 (ntpd), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
    Jan 28 02:03:15	ntpdate[58125]: adjust time server 108.61.73.244 offset 0.003707 sec
    Jan 28 01:08:03	ntpdate[26264]: adjust time server 64.95.243.61 offset -0.003761 sec
    Jan 21 21:29:48	ntpdate[42785]: adjust time server 173.44.32.10 offset -0.191272 sec
Jan 20 12:39:19	kernel: pid 56614 (ntpd), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
    Jan 20 12:39:19	ntpdate[48682]: adjust time server 207.32.191.59 offset 0.003946 sec

It looks like NTPd tries to change the time and then pukes blood all over the place, and it does it at seemingly random intervals.  Everything else on the box is running great, no other issues.  From what I could gather, signal 11 is a memory access error.  It might be a BIOS issue or bad hardware.  I don't think (hope more than think) it's either of those because I'd expect to have more issues than just an NTPd crash.

NTPd starts right back up when I turn it back on and runs without issue until the random signal 11 error.

    I am running 2.0.3-PRERELEASE (amd64) built on Fri Dec 7 22:39:16 EST 2012 FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE-p13.

Any suggestions on places to start troubleshooting?

    Thanks!

      Hi,

I have exactly the same problem.

Apr 18 16:17:35 kernel: pid 1173 (ntpd), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
Apr 18 16:17:35 php: /status_services.php: NTPD is starting up

      I'am running 2.0.3 version also.

I have two pfsense in failover. I have this problem only on one pfsense (the backup one). Configurations are identicals. This problem is very strange.

      Help would be useful.

      Thanks

      Guilhem

        Are you both running 64bit?
Is ntpd serving time to clients correctly? Is it getting time from external servers correctly?

        Steve

I did a reinstall and everything is working fine.  Haven't seen this error since my post.
