    I'm looking to build a pfSense router/firewall in the very near future and I'm hoping to use my Asus RT-N56U as the wireless access point - is it possible? Is it compatible?

    Yes, that should be possible. Usually what you do is to turn off firewall etc., turn off NAT and DHCP, configure the wireless settings as desired then just plug the link from the pfsense-box into LAN port 1 instead of WAN port on the router.

    This should be the general configuration on most home-routers.

    EDIT: obviously it was quite easy.

    Correct on the antennas and diversity. I've changed the distance parameters to try and see if it was an ACK timing issue. No, the distance is not that long but that happened to be what it was set on when I took the screenshot.

    Adjusting any of these settings doesn't change the behavior as it relates to the connectivity issues I'm experiencing.

    I really think there's something to be found from that OpenWRT ticket if we are running the same core/kernel packages…

    I did check it with the actual interface name. But no difference.

    No its not about blocking the access.
    I just don't want to be burning useless energy and filling my house with wifi radiation for nothing.

    Ok i figured it out :), turns out i accidentally had the pfsense captive portal enabled on the WLAN interface. I turned it off and now have internet access haha.

    I was referring to PFSense as an AP (i.e. hostapd). Hostapd supports RAIDUS based dynamic VLAN, but PFSense has no GUI option for that.

    already set to wireless-G , i just resetted to factory defaults… and now my pfsense rig just crashes at restarts whenever a wireless device tries to connects to it

    so maybe buying an access point is easier ? than finding a compatible usb wifi device

    Good point! When I read the original post I took it to mean the 1Watt USB adapter was working with pfSense but on rereading I see it says only that it was working.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ip_address is a good article on IP addresses. For now you can ignore the IPv6 parts. This article might be good background for the following discussion.

    In an IP router every interface belongs to a distinct sub network.
    Computers using IP communicate with other computers on the same network directly and communicate with computers on different networks by going through a router on the same network.

    Consider your desired configuration: pfSense LAN interface: 192.168.1.1/24 and AP: 192.168.1.2/24 These interfaces are on the same network so they can communicate directly. In particular, the AP can communicate directly with any computer on your LAN (192.168.1.x/24). But you have said you want to block the LAN from AP and wireless clients. Therefore the AP and wireless clients need to be on a separate network, say 192.168.2.0/24, and be connected to an interface in that network, pfSense OPT1.

    You have configured the AP to be 192.168.2.5 (presumably with a network mask of 24 bits) so the pfSense OPT1 interface needs an IP address of 192.168.2.x/24 (where x not = 5 since 5 is already used and x not =0 since that is the network number and x not = 255 since that would be the network broadcast address) so, for the sake of illustration lets pick x = 254.

    You want DHCP service on OPT1 and the pfSense web GUI allows one range of IP addresses for DHCP allocation so lets pick 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.199. Enable the DHCP server on OPT1 (Services -> DHCP Server, click on OPT1 tab) and enter the range and save

    Now you need to consider firewall rules. PfSense LAN interface defaults to have a rule allowing any access to anywhere while OPTx interfaces default to have firewall rules blocking all accesses. Hence a rule needs to be added to OPT1 interface allowing access to anything BUT the LAN network. Go to Firewall -> Rules, click on OPT1 tab then click on the "+" button to add the rule: Action=Pass, Interface=OPT1, Protocol=Any, Source=Any, Destination=NOT LAN Net and Save.

    In pfSense firewall packets are matches against firewall rules from top down and processing stops at first match. Hence with that rule an access to an internet site from a wireless client will match the first rule and be allowed while an access to LAN will not match the first rule and fall into the default OPTx rule mentioned earlier and be blocked.

    Now you should try an access from a wireless client: start it up, check it gets an IP address in the correct range (192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.199) and can access the internet but not a LAN system.

    You will need adapt the suggested firewall rule to your particular security policy,

    If you have multiple WiFi clients wanting to associate with pfSense WiFi then the pfSense WiFi interface needs to operate in Access Point mode.

    put the D-Link DWA-556 card into the machine, works fine.  Didn't have to load any drivers or do anything special, pfSense 2.0 detected the card and used the right drivers (atheros chip on this card).

    Hi,

    The Cisco is a "wired" WAP.  Support in pfSense isn't really necessary it will work.

    You haven't said how you want it to work in with the rest of your network but there are at least two easy ways you could set it up:

    connect it in to your LAN

    plug it into a separate (opt) interface

    That seems like a lot of money for a WAP.  You should shop around a bit. These days you could probably get a dual-band (2.4 & 5GHz) wireless router for much less and just disable the routing.

    The Atheros driver bug reported there might explain the problem with the Atheros card reported in the thread but its not obvious it would explain the problem with the Ralink chipset in the AWUS036NH USB WiFi NIC.

    Correct, no it wouldn't, I missed the card change mid-thread. That only applies to the Atheros.
