The sk NICs are PCI and they share a single bus so their performance will always be worse. Should be better than that though, a lot better. Pretty sure I saw 500Mbps sk-sk.

Actually - It was you who mentioned this to someone else earlier (much earlier) and got me to take at look at that.  Before that, I was considering trying to use DDWRT for VLAN, but then decided its probably a pain and perhaps not great solution.

Check the power supply. If it's a standard voltage and you have something else that might fit try that. I've seen similar equipment that seemed to be working, the NIC would establish a link, but the CPU wasn't booting. Turned out to be a bad PSU that was difficult to find because off-load it seemed OK.

Have you been pressing the reset button very often? The reset buttons are not expected to be used repeatedly so they can fail. If it's broken it may have jammed in the 'reset' position which would obviously prevent it booting. Easy to test that with continuity tester.

An Atom will firewall/NAT 500-600Mbps so well able to handle your total 84Mbps WANs. However you will not get that if you're using VPNs as you are. The best OpenVPN speed you're likely to see would be ~50Mbps and that would use all the CPU, nothing left to route other traffic. Step up to a low end Sandy Bridge, G620 for example, and you'll have no problem. A system built with a such a CPU can be surprisingly cheap and sometimes not much more costly to run.

Hmm, slightly odd. The default serial console speed for pfSense is 9600. In 2.0.x you can only change that by adding lines to loader.conf, 2.1 has a webgui option.
It's possible that Netgate's image was customized for them to use 115200.

As I said in Voultar's thread the Watchguard X-core is a special case.

Yes it claims that it meets a certian speed requirement, but this day and age, just get a good branded device and call it good
USB 2.0 or USB 3.0,

just make sure it's not cheap big-box store brand, and you'll be fine

(FYI, i've converted almost all of my USB2 thumbdrives to USB3.0 - they are faster even on usb2 ports)

I had a similar problem, my CF card was not being recognised by either my camera or computer, so I was unable to run any recovery software on the card, so obviously it was a hardware issue. After much searching I discovered http://recoverfab.com, and sent my card to them, and they managed to retrieve all 900 photos I had lost - excellent service and highly recommended.

The bandwidth limit of the PCI bus will likely not be an issue here because the D2500 CPU cannot approach it anyway.

You can't really directly compare soho routers with x86 hardware like that. Most of them are based on SoCs that have been designed especially to be good at routing. Look at some of the top end models that are pushing close to Gigabit speeds from a 700Mhz CPU. No way you could do that with standard x86 hardware.

I'd be surprised if the 1GHz Via couldn't do well in excess of 100Mbps. The Alix board gets 85Mbps from a 500MHz CPU. There's a fairly detailed thread about those thin clients that has real numbers.

Short answer - load up the LiveCD and try it. You stated that you "had this to play with" - so play with it.

Long answer that's still short - there's a compatibility list (it's a Free BSD compatibility list) - check it. The short answer is more direct and takes less time. Things not on the list may work; so back to the short answer.

I currently have this on an MX1004, and it works on the MX0804 as well, one a Intel Celeron 600 MHz and another the VIA 1 GHZ C7.  We work with IBM devices, including the GX3002, but since they are now obsolete, our company gave them away for free, otherwise they will go to the shooting range (yes I know).

I'll also test this out on a GX here that we no longer need to verify it works when I get the time.  I'm pretty sure it should work fine if its x86 arch.

It seems that the ISP is no longer showing crc errors  ???

I noticed that on another supermicro (which also has realtek nics), it has the same problem except that the RRD Data is working fine on that box.

I just got through doing that exact same thing.

Tamosoft,  iperf.   pretty self explanatory once you download them and run the software.  i've found they give somewhat random results.  so i used a disk Mark to measure real world performance on a network share on the other side of the WAN.

My setup was a NAS running sandy bridge and 1GigE link to the WAN and LAN directly to My PC and MAC.  Ran BlackMagic Disk speed test on the Mac and ATTO on pc,  older version. couldn't remember but it was in line with the MAC results.
