    @nincsneve:

    Thanks, but I only have PCI-32bit. For this price I can buy the mainboard and use the PCI-express-dual-Nic, I already have :)

    You can buy that from Ebay from Hong Kong or China suppliers for USD30 or less with free international shipping.  I bought 2 of those for US$27 each with free shipping couple of years back.

    Padlock is the name of the chip: http://www.via.com.tw/en/initiatives/padlock/hardware.jsp#aes

    It supports accelerating AES 128 bits encryption. I believe you would configure AES-CBC-128 in pfSense, otherwise the other algorithms are not accelerated.

    I want to confirm that's how I did it (the new interface is also named em0 and em1) and it worked well. And my names were not lost, but since I have enough slots in the system, two old fxp interfaces are still in there.

    Cool.  The CPUs, CF reader/writer, CF card and null cable all came today.  The Fireboxs are still on the way.  I think the next time I post I'm just gonna open my own PFsense Firebox build thread since it's no longer questions about getting the hardware, but fact, that I have and not thinking about it anymore :)

    Thank a lot for the help, Steve.  You have a lot of valuable information on this site.

    This @imatech:

    it doesn't recognize the internal pci nor any of my usb nics,

    contradicts @imatech:

    it see's the nics and lists them as bge0 and ue0 respectively,

    Please clarify. A driver seeing the NICs and taking control of them sounds like recognition to me!

    @imatech:

    but doesn't let me assign ip addresses and doesn't see the links up when I plug them in…..

    What is your procedure for assigning IP addresses?
    What is reported when you attempt such assignment?
    How are you expecting "link up" to be reported?

    I do a similar thing to backup a 1GB solid state disk module to another.

    dd reads and writes bypass the file system so I don't think the second sync does anything particularly useful.

    I have seen errors reported on some flash drives when using "large" block sizes. I suppose the optimum block size would be the flash drive page size but I don't know a generic way of finding that out.

    I have been running pfSense full install on a Transcend 1GB solid state disk module for over 3 years without problem. But such modules are intended to be disk replacements unlike common USB flash drives which are intended for "read man, write few" applications.

    @bmironb:

    It will not be more easy if you would use an wifi-ap on lan, or on another dedicated interface ? you will have the benefit of N protocol with 300mb or plus bandwidth.From my experience is easier to use something like that than chosing, first a compatibile card, pci or pci-ex, and second i think in my opinion will be more stable and cheaper.

    1. Where I live PCI cards and USB sticks with supported chipsets have been available for some time for well under the local equivalent of US$20. I suspect I would be challenged to find an AP for that price even on eBay.
    2. If you ever have to troubleshoot your wireless connection you might find it easier to do if you have the AP in pfSense than if you have to use a different GUI in a AP which has different defaults, different menus and poorer logging and tracing facilities.

    @wallabybob:

    @ulflun:

    Has this something to do with pfSense or with a UEFI setting?

    A quad port card probably involves a PCI bridge on the card. I SUSPECT (I have no experience with UEFI motherboards) UEFI is not correctly re-initialising the bridge and consequently NICs downstream of the bridge are not visible.

    You are probably right. I found this option in the motherboards (ASUS P8H77-I) manual:

    EUEFI/Legacy Boot [Enabled both UEFI and Legacy]
    Enables or disables boot from the UEFI or Legacy devices. Configuration options: [Enable both UEFI and legacy], [Disable UEFI], [Disable Legacy]

    I will disable the UEFI boot next time I'm at place.

    Thanks wallabybob for your reply.

    Yes it is connected to the modem leased line.

    Before there were no errors in but only collisions.

    When I change to 100baseTX <full-duplex>There where no more collisions but errors in.

    Is there logs of the errors in.

    Cable looks ok since when I change the cable it was the same result. Any other suggestions what would be its effect.

    Yeah I'm going to have to check out the hardware recyclers around the DFW area.  Right now my only spare machine (AMD Athlon XP 3000+) is my current pfSense box.  Most of the places that I've gone to that sell used hardware are way to proud of what they have.  New equipment can be had for some of the prices that I've seen around.

    Right now I'm running a four year old late 2008 Macbook with 8GB of ram and I'm able to simultaneously run 4 VM's (pfSense, NAS4Free, Xp and Kubuntu 12.04) and they all run fairly well.  Only occasionally does the mouse lock up for a bit when one of the VM's is doing something intense.

    @valnar:

    Now…is there anything more modern on the Atom front that uses less electricity for similar performance?

    Yes, but they are either hard to find or expensive, sometimes both.

    Personally I am not a fan of the flexible risers. You should be able to find a combination of 90 degree solid riser and maybe you also need riser extension as well.

    I bought some risers on eBay until I found one that worked, and then I used an extender I already had from a Tyan system.

    Also, if you were to get Pico PSU I think you will find that the consumption could be about halved, also try to enable PowerD.
