      Hi alltogether!

I did an upgrade of PFSense 2.5.2 to 2.6.0 in various locations. I'd better checked the matureness of 2.6.0 before: Users are complaining that WhatsApp calls are not connectiing anymore and some gamers reported problems with wrong NAT-Type.

I did check it in my lab today: PCEngines APU1D4 with PFSense 2.5.2 --> WhatsApp works fine. Upgrade to 2.6.0 --> WhatsApp calls do not connect (but ring). I can't easily go to the 30+ locations and re-install 2.5.2, it would make me travelling for the next 2 weeks.

So here are my questions: Anyone facing the same problem? Anyone having an idea how to fix this? I did not change a bit on the config, I just upgraded to 2.6.0.

Second question: Any way to downgrade to 2.5.2 remotely?

      Any help is appreciated!

      Best regrads,

      Volker W.

Did some further investigations: This is clearly a bug. If the captive portal is activated on the interface, no WhatsApp calls are possible. As soon as captive portal is deactivated (or the client IP is in the list "allowed IP addresses") WhatsApp works fine.

My problem: I can't just turn off the captive portal, this will cause a loss of all revenues ...

Anyone an idea for a workaround?

        Best regards,

        Volker W

          @refugeesonline

Check out the captive portal sub forum.

The issue isn't present on ordinanry LAN interfaces that uses the 'pf' (sense) firewall, only on interfaces that uses ipfw (and pf). pfSense uses ipfw only on the captive portal interface(s).
And yeah, looks like it's 'TCP only' for now.

No "help me" PM's please. Use the forum, the community will thank you.
Edit : and where are the logs ??

@stephenw10 Steve, any idea when this patch will be available? We operate in 184 refugee camps in Germany and refugees are coming from Ukraine. It would be more than a pity if they can't use WhatsApp and such to call their families.

We are testing what we think will be a final patch now.
When we are confident it works for more complex setups it will be made available as one of the recommended patches in the system patches package.

@stephenw10 patiently waiting for the patch.. it is always good to test before upgrading....tested in my lab environment immediately after the release, and experienced this problem.

@colleytech Yep, we did also test 2.6.0 before we started the roll-out. However, we did not detect the problem that ICMP/UDP is blocked when using the captive portal. Bad luck. Next time we will wait longer before we upgrade ...

Yup, should be a system patches package update available that contains this as a recommended patch.

Please test it if you're able and let us know if anything is still not working as expected.

@stephenw10 Steve, first feedback from a handful of sites is also positive! WhatsApp calls work now.

@luisenrique Install the current System Patches package (2.0_4)

Then open Sys > Patches and apply the captive portal patch:
