So i did set up a lab

and the captive portal works well with non-nated interface

it is probably a misconfiguration on my part, i still dont know why
it is not working in the production firewall. but i know it is possible.

i will probably have to redo the whole configuration from scratch.

Ok, I solved it. The PC i was testing it was first going through a Mikrotik Hotspot page, before logging into the Pfsense Captive portal. Upon disabling the hotspot, the portal worked.

This doesnt really make anyway sense to me, but seeing as though we are disabling the Mikrotik Captive Portal to use the Pfsense one, it doesn't really matter

You could download the config.xml and edit the relevant part directly.

ctrl-c, ctrl-v ing all the needed IPs is still faster than adding them all by hand.

i've been successfully able to accomplish what i want to do.
For the sake of pfsense community, i want to share with you guys here.

Actually, what i want to do is using captive-portal with freeradius attr, Max-All-Session with sql database (freeradius server is on another box). So, that i can generate prepaid account with time limit (eg: 5 hours of usage) which the account will be automatically expired/rejected when the limit is exceeded.

It seems that my problem lies in config file of freeradius. I need to add some line for noresetcounter. In freeradius version 2.0, the setting to be enable is at ../modules/counter ;to enable noresetcounter, add a line under instantiate to enable noresetcounter in radiusd.conf, and a line to enable noresetcounterin /site-enable/default under authorize. I installed freeradius with -mysql support.

hmm have you tried 1.2.3 - RC with the same hardware/ruleset, and if so results?

I'm thinking of trying 1.2.3 again, but with the ext. AP in place instead of the wireless card I had tried before.  I'm HOPING that was the cause of the instability I had with 1.2.3 RC
