Just to add some more information before taking down the internet to try your ideas out.

The network cards installed (both WAN and LAN) are TP-LINK TG-3269
    http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TG-3269#spec

I'll edit this post once I've done my tests.

    Ok, it was very simple!

It was the NIC that for some reason wasn't liked WAN side even though LAN was happy  ???

I swapped the WAN to the onboard NIC and it all started working.

Thanks for the pointers and ideas on where to search, much appreciated.

Now onto setting up this beast!

    What he said ^.

Only the default LAN interface has any firewall rules pre-configured. Any further interfaces will need firewall rules adding. Without doing so the behaviour you are seeing is exactly what is expected, everything is blocked.

Go to Firewall: Rules: OPT1 and add a rule to allow what ever traffic you need.

That CPU supports power saving in the form of Via's Long Haul. However there doesn't appear to be a FreeBSD driver for it.  :(

To offer any concrete suggestions, you'd have to provide many more details (geographical & network topology, networking gear in place already, types of cabling, services to be offered e.g. HSIA / VoIP / VoD etc).

Will the hotel use the networking infrastructure to only provide high-speed Internet (HSIA) to guests, or will it also use it e.g. to connect its own equipment e.g. POS, or provide VoIP or video-on-demand to guestrooms etc ?

Do you want to achieve redundancy in terms of WAN connections i.e. to utilize the hotel's 1x fiber & 2x ADSL WAN lines, and if one of them should go down then the guests' Internet traffic would be re-routed via the WAN connections that remain up ?

Anyway, my suggestion would be to hire a consultant who has done this before.

This is exactly what happens when one of your interfaces disappears for some reason, as Wallabybob suggested.
What hardware are you running exactly? What sort of interfaces do you have?

The other reason it might happen is if pfSense can't read the config file for some reason, bad CF card, disconnected drive etc. Since most of your config is still present this has not happened.

Yes you need two incoming connections to do multiwan. It's better to have two separate ISPs since they are unlikely to both suffer a problem simultaneously.

You can do hardware failover using CARP:

Static routes work fine. You probably have asymmetric routing in that case, so you have to have the bypass filtering option for static routes enabled under System>Advanced.

No, there is no package for file server/file access type roles.

Sometimes the Alix with 256MB memory runs out of memory when downloading/installing packages, so the full package reload can die with killed "out of swap space" (= out of real memory on this hardware, there is no swap file). Look in the system log and see if you have any messages like that.
After a few hours waiting, you can clear the package lock (I think it is in Diagnostics->NanoBSD) then go to System->Packages and install the things that did not install (or do a reinstall all packages).

I'm using the 64-bit build (2.1, not 2.0.3) on my DN2800MT, no issues at all.
