@syntax: I can only imagine that with the plethora of 1U racks without CD's flying around (like the Hacoms) that there would be some form of regular demand for this. Your forgot one more option. These devices can boot over ethernet. There are even prebuild VMware machines that you can fire up as server to boot the livecd over ethernet. Haven't tried this yet but it might be worth a try. Should not need to access the console again after a upgrade.

??? ??? ??? Really sounds funny to me… I also had a lot of ... not trouble ... but questions ... but that is normal with a "not stable" firewall version < 1.0 But now REALLY nearly everything works thanks to scotts and bills high speed patches  ;) <<< FTP helper ? Thanks for it to be there but you can surely switch it off and open up your ports, but why do you want a firewall then ? Perhaps use the IRC or forum and there are surely some guys that can help you… ? A very very very happy pfSense user

Thanks for the clarification.  I figured ALL the files/binaries were self contained within the tarball but your explanation makes sense (and I can see why that would not be the case)  :)

If it runs on the native hardware but won't work inside the vm on that hardware this is a vmwareproblem. I'm using vmware server with pfSense on athlon64, dual PIIIs and centrino systems without problems (only for developement and testing). I think there is nothing we can do at the pfSense site to fix this.

The swap partition is optional. If you put enough ram in the box you won't need it. Of course enough ram depends on load and used packages.

Ahh yes, this is confusing.  CARP at one point was a package and at some point in the future we will start turning base features into packages as well.  This is the reason we did not move the setting back to the base area.  A number of base features will be "packages" in the future.
