Ok. I see it would be nice to have a self contained appliance but I think you'll be paying a lot for a box with more interfaces rather than just using, say, a Netgear GS105. It will be much faster at switching as well. Looking at smallnetbuilder review of the RV042 I see it's performance is broadly the same as an Alix (with VPN card) with pfSense. Steve

@podilarius: I was on 2.0-Release for 720 days before upgrade to 2.1-Release (for IPv6 and CARP cluster). It is on a Supermicro server. Running solid!!! That's a nice run! I've avoided updates, upgrades, as many changes as possible, disabling NAT reflection on any UDP traffic like DNS, keeping the fans and mb clean, good equipment room temp, stable power, and no log writing to flash.

Depending on how much bandwidth you've got, that box may get crushed and RAM has nothing to do with it.

1.  I don't really need a static IP at this point.  I do have future plans to assign a domain name to my IP. That's why I have it in place now. 2.  I have updated the http://sjfm.us/temp/WiFiGrid.jpg graphic to reflect how things are wired.  A Cat5e wire brings the grid into my shop and is hooked to the Linksys RV082 router. 3.  We're talking at least 40 cameras..  All static IP, all hardwired into the grid.  All but 3 or so are of the 10.1.10.xxx subnet.  The 3 (or so) are of the 192.168.20.xxx subnet. The D2500CCE is quite widely supported and well used. Your requirements are well within it's capabilities. You won't need anything like 8GB of ram if you're not running squid or snort. Steve

@Aluminum: @_Adrian_: @Aluminum: the 32 port QDR switches are amazingly cheap though loud I got 2 FDR (56 IB/40 GbE) + 1 EN (40 GbE only) which are all dual port and pci 3.0 along with several 100' fiber links for <$900. Still cheaper than the copper X540-T2 10GbE buildout I was considering, yet faster :) Switches are currently cheaper too if I decide to go that route. They all can use SFP+ 10GbE modules with a QSFP plug adapter as well. They might(?) even be able to fan out to quad 10GbE links but not sure how that works. Sounds close to my setup.  I'm running 3 ConnectX-2 VPI cards.  I'm considering a DDR switch, but the noise and power consumption is unwelcome.  In addition, I still need to figure out how to bridge my ethernet in some logical way which those switches will not aid in.  I would like to see pfsense utilized for that bridge, but its just not there nor does it seem to be on the minds of the programers.  I'm still learning infiniband, so I'm not sure how much help I will be other than to test configurations.

Ha! Brilliant thread, the opposite question to so many others.  ;D Just trying to think back on what I might have advised people to use less power and reverse that. None of it really makes sense though. You could enable device polling for a huge hit on the CPU and if you're lucky you might see a fractional decrease in latency.  ::) You could run some virus scanning in the proxy. To be honest if it was me I'd just swap out that power hungry CPU for a miserly C2D. Even a Celeron, I have a 440 here you could have that has a far lower TDP (35W vs 105W). Of course the Celeron will be far more pushed and the C2Q barely idling, it'd be interesting to see how they stacked up power wise. Steve

How about this: http://www.logicsupply.com/components/motherboards/intel-core/nf9g-qm77/ and for more LAN ports: http://www.logicsupply.com/ade4inlang/ I used to use a lot of Jetway gear but had a higher-than-average number of defective parts.  I ended up swapping them out to branch offices until they failed or we moved to larger buildings where direct connectivity was an option. Are you planning on using CARP to provide redundancy?  If so, I'd probably be OK with the Jetway boxes.
